ITGuyNW Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 Hi all Only just getting round to testing the latest monthly patch. On the couple of test computers I've tried, it's broken desktop shortcut icons. Has anyone else seen this before I go off and troubleshoot? July 11, 2023—KB5028166 (OS Builds 19044.3208 and 19045.3208) - Microsoft Support 1
StevieM Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 Local desktop shortcuts still fine on my laptop. Not tried it any computers with redirected desktop folders yet, though.
ITGuyNW Posted July 13, 2023 Author Posted July 13, 2023 I've had a look on reddit and others have reported the same thing, so I'm glad its not just me. Seems to be breaking group policy shortcut icons, leaving them white/blank. 1
DavR Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 I've just been troubleshooting this same thing. We have redirected desktops, and any shortcuts on the redirected desktop which point to URLs are appearing as white, no icon, despite the fact we have a custom icon set. They still work, though. Just verified this by removing KB5028166 from one machine, desktop icons are perfect again now.
ITGuyNW Posted July 21, 2023 Author Posted July 21, 2023 I've not read or seen about any resolution to the issue yet.
DavR Posted July 21, 2023 Posted July 21, 2023 No, I must admit I've not even seen much discussed online about it either. As it's only a cosmetic issue for us, and we're going into the holidays, I've left it alone and am hoping it gets a fix in the August update.
DavR Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 When the August update didn't resolve this problem for us, I did a little hunting online, and have found a solution that fixed this for us. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/1162419/shortcut-icon-blank-when-ico-file-is-located-on-a The group policy setting fixed all the trouble we were having with blank icons. I don't know why the July update caused this problem for us, as the behaviour doesn't seem to be specific to that update, but either way this seems to have fixed it. 4
