Google Apps for Education really really silly question

When you apply for google apps and you use a domain you've already purchased, if I was to use our main domain name it's not going to do anything silly with it is it?

No, not unless you choose to do something silly with it

We are in the process of testing Google Apps and all we had to do was confirm we own the domain, there are a few ways to do this, a dns record, uploading a file to your website or adding something to the header.

Cheers, just wanted clarification before I did it, I know it wont alter MX records etc. but thought I'd make sure.

Just about to start testing it myself too, maybe full transition in the summer.

Google AD sync is a breeze, but have never got the password sync utility to do anything which is irritating.

Using it successfully at a few sites for the password sync, it will only sync passwords changed after it's installed and not existing ones though. The outlook plugin can be a little bit of a pain, with the password box left behind the outlook window when the password needs updating.

Yeah we just get an error when it tries to connect, found a few other people with same issue but no solution.

Perhaps I'll have another crack at it.

We had trouble with GAPS and used the below command on each DC. I also hadn't read the docs correctly and hadn't initially installed GAPS on each DC

I've done two Google Apps for Education roll-outs for schools recently and I can say overall it's been a very smooth process - the hardest bit is getting access to your school's domain for verification purposes as this is often controlled by the LA, unless you've bought your own domain of course. Google apps are definitely the best thing to happen to email since Hotmail. And the best bit is, schools get it for free! (minus any set up costs via a Google Apps reseller, of course )

As others have said, using your existing domain name won't be a problem. In fact, if memory serves, Google create a sub-domain like test.schoolname.google.co.uk (or something!) which you can use for testing until you're ready to change your MX records.

 

As for password sync, I had problems getting it running until I unticked the "allow anonymous AD acccess" box, then it works like a charm. I run it alongside Google Active Directory Sync, and they make a goood team - AD Sync runs once per day and creates the account, sets the display name, and adds it to the distribution groups and then Password Sync keeps the passwords matched.

 

If you can't get Password Sync working, then just set AD Sync to change all passwords and run it every hour.

Can't help, sorry. We set up Google Apps at the same time as a move to a new domain so I didn't need to use the test one.

Just spent 10 mins on the phone with google, it fixed itself while we were running tests, I *think* you need to log in and send an email from the test domain alias to give it a kick to start working, I just set up the accounts without logging in and tried to test, little gotcha there.
