How do i stop Windows updates at inconvenient times?

Hello.

 

We've been having issues with users shutting down / booting up computers and windows updates sucking away their souls with 100's of updates, preventing them from using the computer until it has finished. HELP!

 

How can i stop this from happening? I'm familiar with Group Policies and AD so help on this issue ASAP would be a life saver. I've already almost lost a limb because of gnashing teachers teeth...!!

Setup a WSUS server/set up a policy where you can prevent auto-restart if user logged on and set some settings within there.

 

Look at Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Settings > Windows Components > Windows Update

We have ours set for install updates that don't need reboots automatically. Any reboots are held off by GPOS until Friday PM. Machines also have a GPOS preference to run a scheduled restart each evening before the evening shutdown. If your machines support Wake on LAN, this can help too. If not, you can look at enabling wake on alarm/time in the bios, but this support varies by manufacturers.

I found a policy applied already... It looks like it had scheduled updates for Wednesdays at 12:00pm so i've changed it to Fridays at 4:00pm.

 

We have over 200 machines so setting the Wake On Lan in the BIOS isn't an option to update them overnight (as much as i would love to!)

 

I've also removed the 'install updates and shutdown' button from the shutdown menu for now.
