Hello,

Need some advise on IP based cameras. I am looking to install one externally on the roof of my property to look over the cars etc I just wondered if anyone knew anything about this or personally have one fitted?

It needs to be accessible from the internet and be pretty good camera as it will be quite high. Infa-red for night time viewing and ability to record 24/7 preferably coming with a recording box that can be easily linked to the network at home?

It would be bonus if it can be controlled/moved around digitally as its quite a big front garden.

Any help would be great.

I have seen this one so far but as I said not sure what I am looking at really. =)

Thanks

Personally I think it looks too cheap to me, compared to cameras of similar spec I've looked at before. Also there's no mention of movement detection, so you're going to have hours and hours of video with nothing interesting to look at! It also saves considerable amounts of space on a NAS or wherever you're saving video content.

Looks good @sdc how good is it at recording 24/7 to a storage device? I wanted to refrain from using a computer to record as don't always leave it on. Plus I'm not trekking up to the roof to recover the micro card =)

It's excellent quality - the night vision on it is far better than anything I've seen in this price range. Whilst it has an SD slot for storage, we don't utilise this - we have a dedicated server recording images from 12 of these 24/7 and they stream perfectly well on our very busy network! PM me if you'd like a few sample images and some footage. I have no reason to think the quality from the SD card would be any different to that recorded via the network - if anything, I would imagine it would be better. I can also provide the contact details of the reseller we used; they were most helpful and would probably be able to answer any questions on the SD card front for you.

Thanks for the suggestion, however I think that it should be a wired connection as I don't want it losing signal. Also can anyone suggest one with a storage box included to record as I don't want to have SD card and my NAS is currently dead and don't think i want to replace it.

Are you dead set on the IP route?

I installed a PVR and traditional camera setup for my daughter last year.

The only downside would be that you would need to use camera cable, rather than cat5/6.

A lot more choice, and the PVRs are network/web accessible as well.

I've got something like this:

Standalone IP Wireless WIFI/LAN Camera with Night Vision and Pan/Tilt Motors - Free Shipping - DealExtreme

Mine was from a Uk seller..basically a clone of a Foscam product. Cheap too - it was sub £40.

Mounted upside down under the porch roof, overlooking the Astra/Fabia/Gate/Front garden.

Night vision seems good, PTZ works well. Audio doesn't but..bothered. Got it set to FTP on motion detect, to my hacked NAS running Snake-OS, and via that to a USB drive. Althought it could FTP to anywhere. Has wi-fi built in.

Can also set it to continually pan between desired points..although I never bother with that bit.

Cheap, cheerful, unfazed by rain/snow/wind/sub-zero temps, and scared the willies out of the postie when he walked up th path and saw it panning and blinking in his diection (co-incidental, but funny). When it dies, I'll replace with another...but so far, so good.
