Jimmer3568 Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Has anyone managed to setup email in Spiceworks to connect to Office 365 exchange from behind a proxy? If you have, please tell me how! Thanks.
Jimmer3568 Posted January 24, 2013 Author Posted January 24, 2013 All I'm trying to do this to setup Spiceworks to send/receive email using an Office 365 account. I understand I can't do this using SMTP/IMAP from behind a County proxy as this is not supported by Spiceworks. However, I [think] I should be able to set up Spiceworks using the "Exchange" option - but it isn't working. I've tried variations of "https://servername/exchange" (for example - https://podxxxxx.outlook.com) but it's just not happening. Any idea's??
sukh Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Give this a go - How to set up an SMTP relay in Office 365 1
foofighterjim Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Sorry to drag up an old thread but I have just moved to Office 365 and I am having trouble setting up the relay. I have added the role as outlined in the link posted by @sukh, I think I have all the settings correct. However when I drop a test message into the Pickup folder it gets moved into the queue folder and then stays there. Looking at Event Viewer I get: "Message delivery to the host '213.199.154.23' failed while delivering to the remote domain 'XXXXXXX.XXXX.sch.uk' for the following reason: The remote server did not respond to a connection attempt." I am stumped and don’t know what I have done wrong or how to get around it.
andyrite Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 What are you using for the smart host? What are your ports set to?
foofighterjim Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 By smart host do you mean the relay server? If so it is just one of our DCs. The ports are set to 587 as per the instructions.
andyrite Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 On the relay server you should have an option to set a smart host. What's that set to?
foofighterjim Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 On the relay server you should have an option to set a smart host. What's that set to? FYI I am on Server 2008 R2, I have found the Smart Host setting under advanced delivery but it is empty.
foofighterjim Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Still not going through but I have noticed that the FQDN listed above the Smart Host is our internal server name. Would this be an issue? I have no errors at all in the event log now.

foofighterjim Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 The FQDN is correct there. Have you got a user setup in outbound security with send as rights? Yes, I have ict@.sch.uk with the correct password (basic authentication). It is a full mailbox (not shared) with a full A2 license associated with it.

On the off chance I have messed up with the test message, what settings would Spiceworks need to go through the relay? Would it just be the IP of the SMTP server? As our Spiceworks is on a different server to the SMTP does the Spiceworks server IP need to be added to the connection and relay settings?

It's just the ip of the relay sever as your smtp for spiceworks. You shouldn't need to add the ip. For Spiceworks I don't use the relay. I just have it setup for smtp for outgoing and imap for incoming.
foofighterjim Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 I thought Spiceworks would not go through a proxy??
andyrite Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 We have direct access out for the servers. We use the relay for servers that don't support TLS.
foofighterjim Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 We have direct access out for the servers. We use the relay for servers that don't support TLS. Right, I guess that means the only way I can get spiceworks to work is to use the SMTP relay. Out of interest I put the local server into the Spiceworks outgoing settings and I got: "Error on outgoing settings: Sending email from SMTP server failed: end of file reached" not sure if this is relevant at all.
sukh Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 So what happens after you specify the SMTP relay in your app settings. You can add the IP of where the app is hosted, i.e server ip and restrict to that range on the relay. Then submit message and check app log. Also drop in pickup and see if message goes out, if not, check smtp logs on relay server for reason.
foofighterjim Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Ok, I eventually found out what the issue is. Due to the way BGFL has been setup individual schools can't setup an SMTP relay. I can only use the LEA relays but because we have moved to O365 we can only use the outbound relay. Effectively Spiceworks can now send but it can't receive, Link2ICT are looking into if they can make this work on ports 993 or 995. If they can't my options are: 1. Internal mail server on a sub domain just for Spiceworks. 2. Host Spiceworks outside of the LEA system. 3. Find an alternative helpdesk that will work with proxies. All good fun.
Tesla Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 I'm just discovering this issue but with g-mail, this is such a massive arseache. Actually really pissed me off
X-13 Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 +1 also having this problem. I either can't get it to save [3 days "saving..."? yeah, sure you are] or get errors. I don't have access to the exchange servers, other than as a user, so I can't actually check anything...
