RAM - Am I right?

I have a W7 Pro laptop which is 64 but running. Am I right in thinking that I can 8GB RAM? All the sites I use to get the memory report that it'll only accept 4GB. Why would this be? I thought the limit was imposed by the O/S?

While the 64bit OS can support 8GB of ram, perhaps the motherboard of the Laptop wont recoginise more than 4GB, which is highly unlikely.

Whats the model number?

I thought you had to check the laptop to see how much memory it could support and what it already has in it? Is it not the maximum your laptop can take? I had a look at my brother's laptop over christmas and it had 2x2GB sticks in but 8GB was max the hardware would support.

The motherboard only supports 4GB [2x2GB DIMMS].

 

If you ever want to find out the memory requirements/capacity of a particular machine, the crucial system scanner is my favourite tool for the job.

According to the spec sheet - Vostro 1014/1015 models manufactured from January 2011 or later use DDR3 memory. Earlier versions use DDR2.

 

MODULES MUST BE ORDERED AND INSTALLED IN PAIRS for Dual Channel mode.

 

Maximum Memory: 4GB

 

 

 

If 4GB is installed, the recognized memory may be reduced to 3.5GB or less (depending on system configuration and memory allocation

Mine too, although for my home netbook I found it reported the maximum memory limit for Windows 7 Starter (2GB) rather than the actual memory limit of the motherboard (4GB).
