They "say" it's due to an issue with being unable to renew the building lease in time, but considering there are a fair few empty shops in Taunton already, I can't imagine it being too hard to relocate.

I watched Ghost Protocol last night with Dolby true HD 7 channel audio ... Amazing sound and streets ahead of standard Dolby 5.1 ... So I will not be streaming my films until they get to the same standard .. 1

So I will not be streaming my films until they get to the same standard .. I definitely agree, but I have different expectations depending on the film... - New films that I think look awesome, I go to the cinema - New films that look okay, I stream - Old films I'm unsure/haven't heard of, I either buy cheap on DVD or stream - Any film I've seen and love, I buy on BluRay to get the better picture and audio
Arthur Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 EE to close 78 retail stores UK LTE carrier EE has announced that it will close 78 of its retail locations across the country in order to cut costs. The company found itself with numerous outlets located within close proximity to each other after the Orange and T-Mobile merger — some even side by side — so the reduction in numbers shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. EE says there are other practical considerations, though, such as low footfall in certain areas as well as the decision not to renew specific leases that are due to expire. Staff members at the affected stores won’t be losing their jobs either. Front line employees will be moved to different locations, which EE says should help "boost service levels significantly." The situation is somewhat murkier for managers, however. Only one manager is present in each retail location, so the ones affected by the closures can’t simply be moved across to a new store. Instead, EE says that it will "redeploy" managers where necessary, but it’s currently unclear as to what that will entail.

I didn't buy a decent surround sound system to listen to films in stereo.

We popped into Comet when it was closing down and the store was just a shell with about 30 iytems dumped in the corner. All the staff were in too stood around looking depressed (which is not really surprising). Any predictions who (if any) could go next? Not sure how Argos is doing exactly, but I could see them closing a few stores in the future if the high street continues the way it's going... There may well be some correlation between their performance and the fact they've actually embraced an online model, instead of sticking their heads in the sand and hoping the internet will go away.

I don't have surround sound either, but when I watch Blu-Rays, I really can see the difference and enjoy watching a film more so, especially if it's in the sci-fi/action/war genera. I'm more about picture quality than sound anyway. It's odd though has the wife swears blind that she cannot notice any difference at all between a DVD or Blu-Ray.

I'd rather watch an old VHS of a film with a really good story than uber-HiRes, 3D, DTS, THX, whatever and the intellectual content of the Twighlight saga. I still pay to see the odd film in the Cinema, though it is very rare now. I doubt I'd buy another physical movie disc. I've even dropped my LoveFilm sub to streaming only. Happy waiting for it to appear on LoveFilm or Freeview. Even at it's worse streaming is better than the old VHS, usually on par with DVD. More than good enough for me.

Don't get me wrong, the movie I'm watching is the primary concern, but when I have the option of HD and surround sound, I'll take it every time. That's not to say I won't watch a film just because it's not HD, just that I'd prefer to. No point having a HD TV otherwise! In fact, I find anything less than HD actually looks worse on a HD TV than it did on an old CRT - clearly the upscaling technology isn't great in TVs and I suspect this is a design choice to try to make you shell out for HD content, as the picture from DVD players that upscale is fantastic - I do actually struggle to tell the difference between a new film on DVD on a good player and BluRay. 'Old' films (anything filmed on film!) really benefit from BluRay though, the picture is superb. They could have done much better with DVD, in fact with some of the special edition DVD's they did, but many just seemed to be an almost straight copy from VHS with little improvement in overall quality. They do seem to be making an effort to restore films for BluRay on the whole.

You are not alone mate, I am exactly the same 3D is out for me completely due to my right eye being virtually defunct, a fact brought home when we went into PC World over Xmas (at the behest of a 5yo!) He found a Smart 3D TV on display and donned the glasses, as did Mrs Gatt, both were reacting to the 3D objects flying towards them, but when I put them on all they did was bring the picture into focus, no 3D effects whatsoever. And all because when I was a few years old, I had to wear an Eye Patch to try and correct a lazy eye, but my mother felt sorry for me and took it off me and thenn sat me down within a few inches from the TV.. My eyesight without glasses is now so bad, that anything more than a foot away from me is completely blurred. /Sob Story

I had exactly the same thing, difference is "somehow" i've managed to retain some 3d vision. Opticians insist I shouldn't have but all the tests I did.. both at Great Ormond Street when I was ickle and, more recently, watching films like Avatar and getting the effect (at least after a minute or two as it seems my eyes do need to adjust) indicate to the contrary. Actual prescription still results in lenses heavy enough to sink small seagoing vessels though.

LosOjos Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 I got to see one of those LG UltraHD's 'in the flesh' at the gadget show - absolutely incredible! The only problem was that the example footage wasn't great, they really need to start demoing it with some movie clips (surely the Hollywood studios have already started recording in UltraHD in anticipation of future formats?)

Browsing through the shelves trying to sneak an 18 past the guy behind the counter. Happy times. Ps. How bad does world war z look. The book was brill.
