oxide54 Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 Hi I have a BCM400 anyone know how to get VOIP into this?
oxide54 Posted January 3, 2013 Author Posted January 3, 2013 It supports SIP out of the box. cool cheers.
Geoff Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 I've never used one myself. Not a big Nortel fan. A bit of googling turned up this though. Nortel BCM Interoperability SIP and TRIXBOX - voip-info.org
oxide54 Posted January 3, 2013 Author Posted January 3, 2013 i've seen that, hopefully i can setup a trixbox alongside as the cost of handsets all in one go will be prohibitive to the project.
glennda Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 @john uses voip with his i think, From when i spoke with somebody in brighton who had done the trixbox thing and said it worked fine. If you are looking at sip handsets i can highly recommend yealink ones. 1
oxide54 Posted January 3, 2013 Author Posted January 3, 2013 might have a look at them, do they have integrated ethernet switch ? going to setup trix tomorow/monday got 2 cisco handsets coming and a freebee sip trunk over tinternet for testing. hopefully trix will talk to BCM then i can get the real SLA'd sip trunks to the trixbox and have that communicate with the BCM and slowly move people over. integrated switches in the phones would be a big selling point and would avoid overpriced data point installation when we want to add a phone somewhere which already has a pc.
oxide54 Posted January 3, 2013 Author Posted January 3, 2013 If you are looking at sip handsets i can highly recommend yealink ones. these are the ones i was looking at last week, could not remember the name for life of me today. thank you

Personally i found trixbox a touch strange to use and went with freepbx. The yealink t28p and t20p both have intergrated switches which also support vlan tagging for data etc. They are also very customizable and can be configured via pxe boot which is nice as it means they can be setup from the server and just plugged in. 1

I upgraded my box to the 450 as the 400 was widely regarded as pants for VOIP and very buggy even with the last firmware Nortel made for it (Both BT and a number of resellers I found said the same thing). It was also a decision to move to the 450 as our upgrade as the 400 is all finished and discountinued by Avaya now so you cannot get new keys, hardware etc... so for us having a CCU that is not supported is not an option. I don't use SIP Trunks for calling though I just use IP Handsets and have the genuine Avaya ones for the 450 they are good value for the features so cannot complain and it seems to be working fine for me which is great as our second campus is completely IP handsets. 1
oxide54 Posted January 5, 2013 Author Posted January 5, 2013 i'm thinking more bridge a trixbox/asterixnow/freepbx (something asterix based) to a BCM and slowly migrate users so i don't have to buy 200 handsets all at once and re-train 500 users monday morning. BCM400 for voip isn't looking great looks like you need a license we don't have and @john 's comments aren't promising. I'm certainly not upgrading to another BCM, the idea is the (pick 2 not 3 ) cheapest, easiest, least hassle migration path.

Geoff Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 (edited) To bridge ISDN to Asterisk (trixbox or whatever) you'll need an interface card. The dual port Sangoma A102's I usually use cost ~£500 each. http://sangoma.com/products/telecom_boards/digital/a102.html You'll also need an E1 crossover cable. Edited January 5, 2013 by Geoff

You will struggle to sort licenses and keys out for the 400 given its been discontinued. The 450 was a relatively simple upgrade and actually takes the entire unit up to a much higher standard and powerful system, although again it is short lived we will have to reconsider what we do in the next 3-5 years but gives us the time to plan and budget to change to probably MS Lync would be ideal.
glennda Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 With the FreePBX solution it took me around a week to play with it and configure how I wanted for the school and the roll out was really simple, setup a PXE boot on the freepbx server and all the phones pxe booted to get configs - which where all done via a barcode scanner on the box and a bit of word mail merge's with a bolt on to seperate them to new files. Plugged each phone in and put on correct vlan and walked away.
