Moving Home what happens with the phone line and broadband?

I am going to be moving home soon so I want to know how you get the seem less change of Broadband and home phone provider?

Is the best way to get a MAC form the existing owner?

I am currently with be and would like to stay with be due to contract and also FTTC coming to the area soon.

So long as your new address has a BT line it should be pretty seemless. I've done it a few times in the last few years and at most only had 12hrs or so of flaky service while they change it over.

Problems arise if there is no line at the new address, or if you are with/moving too a company that rents the lines from BT.

If it was me I'd call Be customer services and ask them. Wouldn't surprise me if they could just automate the transfer process for your existing account provided there is a BT line there.

Last time I moved, I rang my provider in advance and spoke to them asking to have all current services transferred - I'd already checked the new place and the requisite gubbins was already installed so it was a simple case of them turning services off at one place and on at the other (admittedly, with an engineer sent to test it).

I did have to go about half a day without services but I was lucky enough to get an appropriate timeslot.

Virgin have a good service, the only problem is that it "resets" the time you've been with them and they open up a new 18 month contract.

Could some one explain how they managed to order Broadband on the line before they moved as you cant seem to do it with out a mac address? Could someone tell me how? I wanted it to be seem less? Or do I have to get a new phone line? There seems to be no process listed on ofcoms web site.

Just FYI.

In terms of Broadband MAC = Migration Authorisation Code

Ofcom | Ask us - Internet Service - What is a Migration Authorisation Code (MAC)?

Just note if you are moving to different area it may not be served by the same BT exchange and you will more than likely get a new phone number. If you are staying say in the same village you will generally keep the same number.
