mini dvd mini bluray? Best storage and use of 1080p footage

I don't know if anyone remembers the days when you would burn a dvd formatted disc onto a CD (used to call them mini or micro DVDs) You could fit about 20minutes of dvd quality footage onto a cd and it would play in most regular dvd players.

 

Anyhow I was wondering if it's possible todo this with bluray? Can I burn a bluray formatted disc onto a dvd disc with reduced run time?

 

I ask as I've just purchased a Canon Legria HF 10 for drama. Most videos would be 10 minutes long. Otherwise is it possible to burn an orange book dvd with an MP4 file hidden on the disc to preserve a hidef copy? Or am I resigned to crushing the hidef into a dvd at 576i.
