Primary school stage lighting

Hi all,

 

can anyone recommend a supplier of stage lighting and a set of portable stage lights with a controller? The school currently borrows at set from a nearby secondary but would like a set of their own.

 

Ideally 2 sets of 4 lights on 2 stands, various preset effects would be nice but with the ability to have the effects turned off.

BUT - work out what you want, and what you need. Flashy stuff for dances, or to light a "stage" for plays? Don't buy waggly stuff unless you want to spend a lot of time programming and repairing it.

Stage Electrics are very good at this type of stuff. If you ask them to come for a meeting with you they will then discuss what sort of things would be good for you and also give you a couple of different quotes for different type of equipment. I use them a lot for hire and sales.

There was a company at BETT the other year showing off LED lighting systems - nice and bright without being roasting hot, can change colour without having to mess around with fitting coloured gels, use less power. They looked good and flexible, just the sort of thing you'd want for a school. I can't remember the name of the company, but it might be an idea to Google "LED stage lights" or similar to see what's available.

LED... All of the above, but terrible if you want to fade in and out, especially the cheap stuff. Possibly OK for a primary school, where illumination is what is needed, but what one might expect in a "proper" stage production can be sacrificed.

The pricing is kind of high on LED stuff also, looking at £900~ a set compared to £300-400.

They are very much toys and for DJs so depending on your hall size are likely to be too "wuusy" and low powered the LED Range from them.

Damn, I never thought of that. Wouldn't it be possible to make an LED lamp that could switch on LED elements individually, thus giving you varying levels of fade? I'm guessing that would be where the expense would come in, though - having each element be individually controller must add to the expense.

Huh? LEDs themselves should be able to fade in and out just fine. I have powered LEDs up and down many times in electronics projects. They aren't like fluorescent tubes.

LED lighting fixtures do fade but have an annoying tendency to "blink" out into darkness, so what should be a fade to darkness becomes a snap, and same on the way back up.

 

Stage Lighting kit on this scale kit is widely available as you now know from the above replies, just try someone and see how much support they offer - that's more important to you than saving a few quid.

Yep, What Sausage says. The do dim, but badly (unless you pay REAL money) and then it isn't yet "right".
