witch Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Can someone point me in the direction of an msi that will work? And are there templates? I have tried several versions now and either they hang on installation or they dont even try. Server 2008R2 with mostly Win 7 clients Anything I need to be aware of?
HarryMonkey Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Here are the links for the downloads. I haven't got as far as installing it yet so can't really say if there are any gotchas to be aware of. Chrome-Browser Policy Templates - The Chromium Projects 1
CyberNerd Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 It's been our default browser for a couple of years now, no real issues.
witch Posted November 30, 2012 Author Posted November 30, 2012 Sadly @stevenewman - that is the installer I have and it just wont work for some reason
X-13 Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Is it a standard Windows network? Or an OEM variation?
sonofsanta Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 The Chrome For Business/Education was fine here - not sure why you're having problems. There's a few fun gotchas with GPO configuration - getting the home page set right, getting favourites to follow, blocking sign-in/web store - but I can send you over the settings I've been cobbling together if you want a headstart on that. Once you get it tied down correctly it's pretty good.
X-13 Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 either they hang on installation or they dont even try. Have you tried the fix in this thread? 1
witch Posted November 30, 2012 Author Posted November 30, 2012 (edited) Thanks @X-13 I am sure that would work but I dont really understand what I would have to do -bit beyond my somewhat limited capabilities I'm afraid...Was hoping someone had produced an msi that incorporated that and therefore worked... The link mentions an mst file but I cant see it! Edited November 30, 2012 by witch
X-13 Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Thanks @X-13 Was hoping someone had produced an msi that incorporated that and therefore worked... I bare no responsibility for any damage this may or may not do to your network... Google Chrome non-updatey MSI. 1
witch Posted November 30, 2012 Author Posted November 30, 2012 @X-13 thanks @sonofsanta -yes please! Standard network BTW
witch Posted November 30, 2012 Author Posted November 30, 2012 Dont confuse me Do I want the msi or the mst? Damn you, acronyms..
X-13 Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Dont confuse me Do I want the msi or the mst? Damn you, acronyms.. MSI if you want to just install it. MST if you want to modify your OLD MSI... Or if the NEW MSI doesn't work. 1
sonofsanta Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 You're deploying with GPO? Grab the MSI and the MST, when you add the software, choose the Advanced option on the little dialog with three options. Then go to the Modifications tab and Add the MST file. Simples! GPO settings - PM me your email and I'll send over the report from my GPO, easiest way. EDIT NEVER MIND I HAVE YOUR EMAIL ANYWAY, I'll send it over now 1
X-13 Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Grab the MSI and the MST The MSI I linked has, apparently, already been tweaked to not need the MST. 1
witch Posted November 30, 2012 Author Posted November 30, 2012 DONT CONFUSE ME I think this is the installer I had yesterday though and it just...didnt Nothing happened and nothing was installed
sonofsanta Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Download MSI from https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/education/browser/ Download MST attached to this comment (as referenced in thread referenced in thread) Do Advanced & Modifications thing wot I said about on last page Let us know how it goes
X-13 Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 DONT CONFUSE ME http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m3m4qtXsTE1rtcfaqo1_400.gif First link - Try that on it's own. Second link - Try that [along with @sonofsanta's GPO settings and your original MSI] if the [new]MSI still fails.
witch Posted November 30, 2012 Author Posted November 30, 2012 Just created a GPO and applied it to my computer. I did add the mst for the heck of it and now it seems to work where it didnt before! (definitely same file) So - didnt I read something about templates somewhere? Do I need to do anything else?
X-13 Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 So - didnt I read something about templates somewhere? That was, like, a whole page ago. [Page 1, first reply.] Stop living in the past! The templates, IIRC, are just pre-configured files to save you having to lock it down yourself.

I dont know what I need to lock down...What do I need to lock down???? Whining now We have to use IE because our mail system doesnt work with Chrome - that's why I have never bothered until now. But the music teacher wants to be able to use something Chrome-y (100000 stars) and asked if we could have it.
sonofsanta Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Download the zip file of ADM/ADMX files from the link on the first page (Policy Templates - The Chromium Projects) Unzip the file, and go into the Windows\ADMX folder. Copy the chrome.admx file from there into C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions on your domain controller(s). In that folder on your DC there'll be a folder called en-US or similar - however that folder is named, go into that same folder in the unzipped files and copy the chrome.adml file from there into the en-US folder on your DC. So you'll have copied an admx file and an adml file from the ZIP onto your domain controller. Then create a new group policy and start setting settings as normal - you can more or less copy what's in that HTML file I sent to you (if you haven't got that email, let me know and I'll resend the attachment as a different filetype)
Gibson335 Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Does anyone else have a problem with the Home button when using Chrome over a network? Managed to get the Home page set up working fine, so it opens up to it OK, but once in use the Home button doesn't work.
X-13 Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 I dont know what I need to lock down...What do I need to lock down???? Can they run incognito mode? Can they access settings? If they CAN access settings, can they CHANGE them? Where is the cache going to be? [Local or roaming?] What size is the cache? Autoupdate? That's just off of the top of my head... Grab the template. If anything, it'll be a good start to getting it sorted.

Check the settings I posted here: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/internet-related-filtering-firewall/104771-google-chrome-homepage.html#post898256 I can't get the home page to appear on a new tab, but it appears on launch, and it appears when the home button is clicked. 1
