We have a new addition to the family due in the new year and I need to look into a baby monitor. I was wondering has anyone has any recommendations on models or things I should be considering before a purchase?

OK. Our fisher price one just died...after 3 years of decent service, but fuzzy and interference prone reception.

We now have a new one, arived last night..tommee tippee DECT thing, with remote thermometer and remove controlled light, 2 way speech..about £30 from Amazon..much better...

Camera wise, I've not bothered...but I've got a PTZ IPCAM that cost me about £30 too..it does sound and night vision, so I've pondered puting it in daughters room..heh

I bought this angelcare one when my daughter was born. Had heard the sensor mat was prone to going off through the night but only experienced that once. Still going strong now as a temp monitor in her bedroom as i've got a really cold house i still use it nearly 3 years on.

Got this one too, never had a problem with the sensor and I bought one with a second remote (so me and my partner have one clipped to out belts).

I don't think you can go wrong as long as it has a movement sensor and temprature control.

I bought the Angelcare for one of my brothers 18 months or so ago and him and his wife think it is awesome. My other brother and his wife are now expecting and I have bought them one too.

How much of an awesome uncle am I? (Or do I have more money than sense?)

You've just spent hundreds of pounds on a flash, right before Christmas. I think we all know the answer to this...

and to think you can give them nice Lenovo tablets when they get older to learn on and learn about family rates for fixing PCs via Facebook.... :p

Good heavens... So much technology!

When we bought one 19 years ago it was basically a microphone on one socket and a speaker on the other. For everything else we went in the room.

Interacting by video sounds a bad idea to me. Once young 'un is in bed, that's enough interaction unless there's a problem... in which case they scream. Sometimes the best solution to screaming is to turn the speaker end off! (If you haven't had a toddler go through the terrible twos you'll classify this as child abuse ;))

Then again, my Mum probably thought the technology we had was a waste of money too! :D

Forget the rest.

Get a yCam. Faultless. Wireless, get view on iPad mobile devices, anything with a browser. When we don't need it to monitor baby anymore I going to use it to monitor my house.

Can send email if it detects movement and save recording to FTP

When we stay away we take wireless router and cam. Gives us a bit more freedom.

We've got a vtech dect one. Good reception, rock solid (it's been dropped down the stairs more times than I care to remember), although nothing fancy. There's no video and no talkback, but a handy 'play lullaby' function which our little one likes.
