We currently have a Windows 2003 server and XP clients, running redirected My Docs and Start Menu done through GPO successfully. Now I need to add Win 7 clients. I can find lots about the settings for redirecting the start menu, but nothing about how to create the actual start menu. I have a share set up for the XP client start menu folder:

1. can I put the Win 7 start menu in there?

2. where do i get the start menu from to put in the share? and

3. can I just copy it across?

I know it's prob a stupid question, but I've never had to do this before, as the XP start menu was set up for me when the server was first installed.

Create a share called Icons for example, then set the GPO as follows:

\\SERVERNAME.domain\Icons\Win7\Curric\Start Menu\Programs
\\SERVERNAME.domain\Icons\Win7\Curric\Desktop

\\SERVERNAME.domain\Icons\Win7\Staff\Start Menu\Programs
\\SERVERNAME.domain\Icons\Win7\Staff\Desktop

On the Icons share add these permissions:

Everyone - Read and Execute
CREATOR OWNER - Full
Authenticated Users - Read and Execute
SYSTEM - Full
Domain Admins - Full
Administrators - Full

Without this in place redirected Desktops or Start Menus on Windows 7 won't work. Hope this helps!

Sort of helps, thanks. Do I just drop all the program shortcuts from the local Win7 All Users start menu in the Programs folder on the share? Could I use my existing share and just create a Win7\Curric\Start Menu\Programs path, making sure permissions are as you suggest?

Yes.
