Google Chrome Homepage

I'm in the process of configuring the ADM file for Google Chrome. I think I've got everything set how I want it, except for the homepage - I have specified this as our intranet, however it still comes up with the New Tab page. What am I missing?

Could you post a screenshot of your Google Chrome GPO settings? [Masking any information you do not want to show publicly]

 

It might help/speed up with suggesting solutions.

I've just checked ours.

 

We have the following set in the GPO - Google Chrome - Startup Pages

Action on startup - Set to "Open a list of URLs"

URLs to Open on startup - Google, Helpdesk URL,

 

Can provide screenshots of other policies that are set if this does not work for you.

That's how I've set ours too, and those open just fine, but I want a way that people can get back to our intranet page again if they need it. The problem with Chrome recycling tabs is that these initial tabs will quickly become something else, and I need staff to have a quick route back to the intranet page.

Right, here are the GPOs I've got:

 

First one will be applied at quite a high level and cover common settings:

 

Second one will be applied at a user group OU level, and contain settings specific to pupils or to staff:

 

For testing purposes, these are currently applied at the same level, but that I don't see that would make a difference since there is nothing set in both GPOs.

 

The startup pages load, but when the user clicks on the Home button, they get a cut-down New Tab page which just shows the Chrome Store rather than the home page which is specified.

Try setting the homepage in the IE settings in GPO, Chrome uses the same settings.

Home page on startup is doable - I think Startup Pages > Action on Startup = Open a list of URLs, and URLs to open on startup = [homepage] are the relevant ones there.

 

I've also set the home page under Chrome > Home Page > Configure the home page URL, and the same in Chrome (Recommended) > etc. just to be safe. Use New Tab Page as homepage is set to disabled in the same place (that may be the one you need).

 

Finally, under the first level of Chrome settings, Show Home button on toolbar = enabled.

 

That all results in open chrome -> get home page, open new tab -> need to click home button. Best I could seem to get it.

I did consider the setting which pulls the homepage from IE (you'll note I've used it for bookmarks and history), but would rather find a method that works just within Chrome.

Thanks, that was the one I needed.

 

I did look at that, but the description didn't say to me that it would control this. I guess by disabling the New Tab page it forces it to look to the homepage setting instead.

What do you think about having it set to re-open the pages from the last session?

 

I have that setting enabled myself and find it really useful, but am not sure whether others would find it beneficial or not...

You can do this in group policy if you install the Google Chrome ADMX on your DC.

 

Took me a couple of goes to realise that they differentiate between start up page (the page the user sees when they open the application or a new tab) and homepage (the page the user sees when they click the "Home" icon).

Same here. On both counts!
