kennysarmy Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 I am going through the process of upgrading the drivers on our Printer server which is Windows Server 2003. One of our printers is the HP3550N. According to their website there are no windows 7 drivers http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=411176&taskId=135&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=411171&lang=en&cc=us I have installed the printer on the server using the 2003 drivers and it prints fine. I have (from a windows 7 64 bit client) connected to the server share for the printer and installed it using the VISTA 64bit drivers - which again seemed to work. On the server I have ensured the x64 drivers are there. When I logon to a windows 7 (32bit) client as a teacher or student, that prints to this printer I get the pop-up box as attached. If I clear the box I can still successfully print ! How can I prevent the box appearing? Will this help? Allow Standard Users to Install Drivers For Devices from Specified Setup Classes Many thanks for any suggestions..
kennysarmy Posted November 19, 2012 Author Posted November 19, 2012 Interestingly Windows 7 64bit computers are not getting this pop-up....
kennysarmy Posted November 21, 2012 Author Posted November 21, 2012 No one ever seen anything similar?
FN-GM Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 Have you tried the universal drivers? We have a couple of these and work a treat with that driver.
kennysarmy Posted November 21, 2012 Author Posted November 21, 2012 Have you tried the universal drivers? We have a couple of these and work a treat with that driver. Unfortunately this model does not seem to support the UPD
sted Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 how have you got point and print setup? on a group policy computer config\admin templates\printers\point and print restrictions i set it enabled then tixk users can only print to machines in their forest and set both of the security prompt boxes to do not show warning or elevation prompt
Michael Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 I agree (as above) it'll be point and print restrictions.
kennysarmy Posted November 21, 2012 Author Posted November 21, 2012 Thanks: I ran a group policy results on an affected machine with a test user account: The results are: Policy Point and Print Restrictions Setting Disabled Winning GPO 7-Printers Computer Policy From the help it says: When the policy setting is disabled: -Windows Vista client computers can create a printer connection to any server using Point and Print. -Windows Vista computers will not show a warning or an elevated command prompt when users create a printer connection to any server using Point and Print. -Windows Vista computers will not show a warning or an elevated command prompt when an existing printer connection driver needs to be updated. -Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP client computers can create a printer connection to any server using Point and Print. -The "Users can only point and print to computers in their forest" setting applies only to Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP SP1 (and later service packs). So that looks right to me.....
kennysarmy Posted November 21, 2012 Author Posted November 21, 2012 Going to re-image the PC with Windows 7 64 bit just to see what happens....
nathan_b Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 Going to re-image the PC with Windows 7 64 bit just to see what happens.... We had this same issue - users don't have install permissions, and thus can't install the printer drivers. Point and print was the fix for us...
techsup1983 Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 I once came across something similar to this and my fix was these two polices: Computer Configuration> Policies> Administrative Templates> Point and Print Restrictions User Configuration> Policies> Administrative Templates> Control Panel> Printers> Point and Print Restrictions
kennysarmy Posted November 22, 2012 Author Posted November 22, 2012 I have these policies: User Config -> Policies -> Admin Templates -> Control Panel/Printers Browse the network to find printers Disabled 7-lockdown Prevent addition of printers Enabled 7-lockdown Prevent deletion of printers Enabled 7-lockdown But they don't seem to affect any other printer connects at logon - just this 3550 I personally think there must be something very non-standard about this driver
kennysarmy Posted November 22, 2012 Author Posted November 22, 2012 The windows 7 64bit client does not produce the error.....

kennysarmy Posted November 22, 2012 Author Posted November 22, 2012 OH MY! I've tracked this down to the MOUSE!!!!!!!! What the? If I reboot and logon as a student with the mouse OUT - no message. If I reboot and logon as a student with the mouse IN - I get the message as per my initial post... Any ideas before I start trawling through which of my policies might be causing this?
kennysarmy Posted November 22, 2012 Author Posted November 22, 2012 I also get prompted using the test user when I plug in and out the MS Keyboard. I've removed all computer and user policies and still the UAC prompts when I plug in and out both the k/b and mouse
kennysarmy Posted November 23, 2012 Author Posted November 23, 2012 So to recap: I have in my office for testing this: PC1 - which was imaged with windows 7 64bit in the summer - each time I plug the mouse or keyboard in and out I get the UAC warning as a std user. PC2 - which was imaged with windows 7 64bit this week - where each time I plug the mouse or keyboard in and out I DO NOT get the UAC warning as a std user.
sted Posted November 23, 2012 Posted November 23, 2012 id say pc1 has some corrupt drivers so ith thinks standard items drivers are unsigned and need admin approval
kennysarmy Posted November 23, 2012 Author Posted November 23, 2012 id say pc1 has some corrupt drivers so ith thinks standard items drivers are unsigned and need admin approval Thanks - but it seems to be affecting a larger number of PC's....one whole room certainly has this issue.....the room was imaged in the summer.
sted Posted November 23, 2012 Posted November 23, 2012 Thanks - but it seems to be affecting a larger number of PC's....one whole room certainly has this issue.....the room was imaged in the summer. but if its all from the same image error carried forwards
kennysarmy Posted November 23, 2012 Author Posted November 23, 2012 We are going to re-image a PC and before installing any additional software or doing any MS updates see if the problem appears.
AlexB Posted November 23, 2012 Posted November 23, 2012 (edited) Try this option for drivers in general. You'll have to find out the class for the type of drivers you want to allow. Otherwise just for printers try this option. (as previously mentioned) Edited November 23, 2012 by AlexB
kennysarmy Posted November 23, 2012 Author Posted November 23, 2012 Try this option for drivers in general. You'll have to find out the class for the type of drivers you want to allow. Otherwise just for printers try this option. (as previously mentioned) Thanks - I tried that sadly it did nt work. I created a new GPO - the only one that was applied and allowed the following classes : {4d36e96f-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} {4d36e96b-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} I believe one to be the mouse and one the keyboard. I wonder if this could be a clue: darkoshi | automatic updates device driver problem
kennysarmy Posted November 23, 2012 Author Posted November 23, 2012 This is the sequence of events on the affected PC's when a non-admin user logs on or removes and re-inserts the mouse. I entered admin details to the UAC prompt.
sted Posted November 23, 2012 Posted November 23, 2012 looks like you have some strange ms keyboard/mouse software rather than std windows drivers perhaps its installing software as well as drivers which would nesesciate the uac prompt
