Boilers and Gas.....

 

I have a query, not sure whether I need to get a gas man out or not.. thought I'd ask in case some of you have experiences it before.

 

I have recently had a new gas hob fitted (rented house), it's a bit cheap and nasty. However the main problem is when the rings are lit there is the noise of air and a faint whistle. If you turn the ring up full and turn it back down again the noise goes and everything seems normal, also if I turn the hot water tap on the pressure on the hob drops slightly. Then once the tap is closed the pressure returns to normal sometimes going back to sounding very 'air-ey' and sometimes gives a whistle.

 

I think the boiler is definitely on it's way out - it seems like an old one and a bit of a PITA - it's a Sime Friendly 80e.

 

Anyone comes across this ?

I have the occasional whistle from my hob. I don't think its anything to worry about.

 

However it sounds like your hob is connected very close to your boiler and so the one will kind of take priority over the other. This is probably the reason why when you turn your hot tap on the gas pressure on the hob reduces as the boiler is 'firing' up to heat the water. If i recall correctly the supply from the meter should now be 22mm pipe all the way to the boiler (think it can be 15mm within a meter from the boiler but no less). I'd get a gas safe bloke to come and have a look.

ok I might just do that, the boiler is actually up the stairs, the kitchen is right next to the gas meter so I'm guessing the Hob is closer on the ring from the meter.

get the gas man... but it sounds to me like the regulator on the cooker is badly adjusted.

With gas/boilers it's best not to mess about if you think somethings a miss, having suffered CO poisoning it's not a nice thing and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
