Updating Acrobat Reader

Hi folks.

 

N00b question:

 

How do I update Adobe Reader - Do I just roll out the new MSI? Do I need to do anything with the previous one? I just rolled it out, as it came. But is there a guide or can anyone tell me what I need to do to turn off its update notifications?!

I just rolled out the MSI again, back in the days when all our software updates where manual.

Disabling the update notifications can be done in the registry:

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\11.0\FeatureLockDown]

create a new DWord, named "bUpdater" with a value of 00000000

you can just roll out the msi (presonally id set the old one to remove first) you can either create an mst for it with the customization wizzard or download the adm/admx files and do it as/in a gpo if you want do disable eulas make browsers open/not open pdf etc

no risk as such i just dont like doing updates id rather remove v10 before i install v11 rather than do an upgrade if nothing else its neater and SHOULD be less of an issue

Install the customization wizard from ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobat/win/11.x/11.0.00/misc/ on your machine

 

Use that to "open" the MSI file and you can set loads of settings in there - suppress the EULA, set Reader to be default (not AcroPro), disable updates, uninstall previous versions before installing... then generate the MST transform and install the new version with msiexec /i acroread.msi TRANSFORMS=acroread.mst

Which is better then? The ADM/ADMX method or the customisation wizard? Wont the ADM/ADMX apply to all future installs?

 

If that is the better method, Ive lost my guide to installing them, got a 2008R2 server - where abouts do I stick them again? (brand new network this summer, alot has happened since then )

6 of one half a dozen of the other to be honest ive used customization wizard for v10 but as theres an adm for 11 ive started using that and havnt found any real difference. The only real enefit of either is you can easily make a change to existing deployments with adm that you cant with mst but tbh its acrobat reader once you have killed eula and updater what else needs doing 95% of the time

We use Ninite to update Adobe and the website plugins.

 

You can disable the update notifications by deleting the update finder from Scheduled tasks.

I was just about to deploy XI and switch back to Reader from Foxit, then read this. Freakin' typical. Now I'm not sure if I should go ahead, or wait for a patch that will probably have another zero day exploit anyway. Ugh.
