Failover from one internet connection to another

Would it theoretically be possible to set up a system so that if your internet connection from your ISP failed you could have something detect this and switch over to a 3G router instead?

 

A bit sketchy at the moment as this wouldn't be for my school but a friends!

It is possible. I was having a look at some of the smooth wall filtering box`s last year and some of those allowed you to fail over to a 3G connection which you could then set up certain priorities and restrictions for if you wished.

There are plenty of routers on the market with Dual WAN ports that can be set up for either fail over or round-robin load distribution, etc. You'd need Lan port on the 3G and ADSL (I assume) modems to plug them into the Router's WAN ports, or ADSL/3G routers with the Dual WAN router plugged into DMZ ports? Or you have both modems (3G and ADSL) plugged into a PC then I'm sure Linux can be set up to manage routing.

Draytek do a dual/tri failover router.

 

But if your using your own hosted internet/mail/yada servers on static IP's they will not work unless you change DNS settings ( or have 2 MX for Mail. )

Would a service like DynDNS resolve this problem?
