6Foot2 Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 What's a wag?! lol [Perhaps shortened from wag-halter a rogue.] A man full of sport and humor; a ludicrous fellow; a humorist; a wit; a joker. Wag-halter: One who moves or wears a halter; one likely to be hanged. my fave is FUBAR! Another with a similar flavour is SNAFU. I read that some individuals like to daisy-chain such acronyms using SNAFU and FUBAR in the same sentence to describe the same mess/situation.
Little-Miss Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 Another with a similar flavour is SNAFU. I read that some individuals like to daisy-chain such acronyms using SNAFU and FUBAR in the same sentence to describe the same mess/situation. Ooh, that's a new one to me! Like it! Thanks for the explanation Dave!

6Foot2 Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 (edited) Here are some I have culled from the following website: Link I have not included definitions, you will have to look them up for yourselves! Although not all of the acronyms included here or on the website are "rude" AHOYA [Although strictly that should be AHOTYA] BANANA BDU BMW BOHICA BURP CHAV CRAFT DRTAGTSTW 2FC/2 FIGJAM GOLF HIVI [Having seen that defined I had to include it: The wife is standing right here!] LOMBARD MUPPET OSINTOT PICNIC SABU SPEW SUMO TLR UBI WINDOWS [Mac fans who have not seen this one yet: Look it up] Back to the supplementary part of my posting: Airline Acronyms [with definitions] LUFTHANSA: Let Us Find The Hostess As No Steward Available or: Let Us Free The Hostages And Not Shoot Anyone or: Let Us Feel The Hostesses And Not Say Anything QANTAS: Queers And Nancies Trained As Stewards or: Quench A Nagging Thirst And Sleep or: Quite A Nice Trip All Survived. (Originally Queensland And Northern Territory Air Service). SWISSAIR: Sexy Women In Swissair Services Are Indeed Rare. TWA: Travel With Anxiety or: Thousands Wandering Aimlessly or: Terrorists Welcome Aboard or: The Worst Airline or: Try Walking Across or: Teeny Weeny Airlines or: Third World Airlines. Band name acronyms [without definitions (none of the definitions reflect how I, Edugeek or the website carrying the definition "feel" about the product I am sure)] ADIDAS DHL Have to finish the post there: Local "interruption" is demanding my attention. Edited November 16, 2008 by 6Foot2 Correct spelling mistake.

elsiegee40 Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 A very old one... popular at the time when Big Blue managed a 4 billion dollar loss... and people like me were supporting mainframes. IBM > I Blame Microsoft
AngryTechnician Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 Pet peeve of mine that I will now impart to you all: an abbreviation such as those above is not an acronym unless it's pronounced as a single word. For example, RAM is an acronym, but CPU is not an acronym (unless you are strange and pronounce it kuh-poo or something). It is instead a different type of abbreviation, called an initialism.
AngryTechnician Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 IBM > I Blame Microsoft When I worked for them I remember an email doing the rounds that had about 20 different definitions on it. Only ones I can remember other than your one were "I'm Being Managed", an allusion to many people having multiple managers, and "I've Been Moved", referring to the frequent re-organisations.
6Foot2 Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 For example, RAM is an acronym, but CPU is not an acronym Accepted. I should have been more accurate/specific.
laserblazer Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 I think it counts as an acronym if it is said as a word even if there is no such word. NAAFI. No Ambition And F****all Interest.
AngryTechnician Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 Oh, absolutely - the word doesn't have to exist already, so long as it's pronounced as one rather than saying each letter.
seacider Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 I think it counts as an acronym if it is said as a word even if there is no such word. NAAFI. No Ambition And F****all Interest. I remember NAAFI SOUP as above with switched off and unplugged!
theriver Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 [...] Another with a similar flavour is SNAFU. 6Foot2 Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 While answering a question on another forum I was reminded of this thread. In that answer the subject of Bing [the search engine] being a Backronym came up. BING: Because It's Not Google or But It's Not Google or BING Is Not Google [recursive backronynm] Not sure if this is accurate but I think it would be more than a little ironic if Microsoft were to name its new search engine in a manner which includes the name of the major competitor.
kearton Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 BING Is Not Google [recursive backronynm] A bit like GNU is an acromyn for "GNU Not Unix" ??
