We need a text that describes a number and used the same amount of characters (no numbers, spaces, symbols or punctuation). So: 8 = TWOCUBED 10 = SIXADDFOUR 20=FOURMULTIPLIEDBYFIVE We have worked out all of them from 8 to 20 apart from the number 9! It's driving us nuts! Can anyone come up with one? You have to think of different mathematical functions and the different vocabulary that can be used to mean the same thing. Making youngsters realise that subtract, take away, minus, less can all mean the same thing is important when handling wordy mathematical problems... they often forget in exams! 1

What, precisely, is wrong with anything that encourages students to think of numbers in different ways?
