dany2010 Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 We would like to setup a new IP plan that shows so we know the ip address depending on the room number. We are also trying to avoid going with static IP addresses. Is it possible to create DHCP reservations depending on the computer name? This would mean that if a computer were moved we wouldnt have to log into the server to change its IP. Thanks.

PC is moved and renamed 02-29 change it's ip to be from the second block. ???? Ben

If the network was VLAN'd that wouldnt work as you'd be reserving the MAC address in one VLAN, move the machine and the MAC address stays the same but there is no reservation. At least with the machine name it could change meaning it could work across any VLAN.......all assuming the network in question is VLAN'd.

A: The manager likes to move PC's when one is broken buto doesnt change the IP. So when you replace the moved PC and set the IP up you then have a conflict. No matter how many times you explain. B: Makes everything easier and less complicated.

You'd only have to do this if they were on a fixed IP....why put every machine onto a fixed IP? B: Makes everything easier and less complicated. DHCP is the easiest and least complicated method surely? Put a small number of IP's in each VLAN which arent issued through DHCP and if you need any machines on a fixed IP put them on one of those (at least, thats how we do it.....).

twin--turbo Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 We used to run our own MYSQL DB with a web front end, The DB had MAC, Room, IP, Machine Name, A script checked a flag file every minuet for changess and if it found a change it rewrote the DHCP config. Worked very well for a number of years. Rob
