I had an interesting chat with a guy from Capita on Friday, he says that the Spring SIMS update will be that last one to support XP/Vista/2003. Has anyone else heard this?

so an August 2013 timescale - that rings a bell. If that includes the server, that's going to be a good little earner for them as they do the 2003 to 2008 R2 migrations (or 2012?)

Makes sense though. MS pull support for XP in April 2014 so next Summer is the last full summer with XP support from them anyway and therefore an ideal time to carry out migrations.

Probably looking to update our SIMS server in Easter (everything else is 2008 R2). So, 2008 or 2012? ;)

Yep I believe that is true.

Can't find the supportnet doc, am fed up trying to use the search on that site!

I am not sure that 2003 support is being pulled at the same time though is it? There is a roadmap of supported software on the site somewhere!

Yeah, the guy from Capita said that there's a roadmap somewhere with all the details in, but AFAIK that wasn't emailed to us, I guess it goes to the main person in charge of using SIMS.

We've not got many Admin machines still using XP fortunatly, but all the primary schools we support still use XP everywhere. Going to be fun convincing them they need to spend money to upgrade!

Had an email about this from Capita - Not that i'm on XP any more.

Apparently server 2012 and SQL 2012 migration tools are available for you to migrate from Autumn release, but no support for it by capita until Summer. (Sure that's what email said). I remember thinking, so you can migrate away from 2008 but they dont support it.

Looking at their technical road map:

-2003 will not be supported any-more after the Spring 2013 update.

-XP (x32) won't be supported after the Summer 2013 update.

-Vista after Spring 2013 update.

-Also Microsoft Office 2003 won't be supported after Autumn 2012 update.

Who knows though, Capita might push some of them back.

Search for resource 17910 for the latest SIMS technical roadmap.

You can download the "technical Roadmap" from Supportnet.

For SIMS SQL Server support for Server 2003 ends Spring 2013.

For the SIMS Client support for XP ends Summer 2013 and Vista Support ends Spring 2013.

Office 2003 support ends Autumn 2012

@Ghostgame - beat me to it

I am REALLY surprised about them dropping support for 2003 Office so soon! Considering the reporting section of Office is particularly broken at the moment with ANY version apart from 2003!!!!

To be honest, its about time. XP is now OLD, as are Office and Server 2003. Doesn't mean, that we aren't using all 3 here, but it means its gonna force our hands to migrate.

Question is - do we go to Windows 7 or 8... :p

I'm not surprised. With XP going out of support in early 2014, I would think that most sites have already moved away from it or have plans to ditch their last few machines by the coming summer.

I hope that 2003 Server support end next year from Capita is not true. Apart from the fact its still supported by Microsoft until 14/7/2015, our SIMS server just sits there and works causing us no problems, now the hassle of upgrading the Server OS and migrating the SQL Database all for........ erm the sake of it?

With the joys of mixing XP/2003 environments with 7/2008R2 environments I find it understandable. Besides, you'd have to do it exactly a year down the line anyway if they held it back until Spring 2014. If I remember rightly the same applied when they moved from NT up?
