replacement power supplies for promethean boards

Voltage, Current, connector size and polarity.

The Promethean PSU output 6v and 1.7a. I can't remember if the centre is positive or not. And i can't tell the size of the connector.

Would you mind mentioning how much they were Witch? Just out of interest. Replacement projector remotes were £75!! Pens have come down quite a bit now, especially if you buy a few.

CPC code PW00521 is a 6V 2A PSU with a range of connector sizes, £13.11 ex VAT. Page 1600 of the dead tree catalogue.

 

The relatively high current and 6 rather than 12 volt pushes the cost up.

this is very close to the psus for Activboards (same company, unbranded etc), but don't order it because the output voltage is too high and the amps are off too, but it's a good example because these are £20 without packaging. Ours are £25+£5 P&P. That's not bad when you compare to some companies.

up to you, I know how sensitive the chips on our electronics are, and I wouldnt risk it. definately not with a board that's in warranty. if it's in warranty and we see another kind of psu dangling from the system during a repair then there may be a hefty bill involved.

I'm with Andrew_C : I've used the 6V 2A £13 PSU's from CPC and there fine.

A 2A PSU is rated to be able to provide 2 Amps - if the board only draws 1.8 amp then it's not going to force 2A on it!. Just another over hiked price from promethean.

@StuartC: Surely if a board is in warranty, the PSU would be under warranty and would simply be swapped out by you guys?

I thought the same myself ric_ after suffering a psu failure, I contacted promethean.

 

The 10 year warranty only covers the actual board, not the pens, psu or cables. Considering the price of the boards, I felt a little short changed.

@steve: I could understand the likes of pens and maybe connection cables not being covered since these are open to abuse (e.g. dropping pens and continual plugging/unplugging).

 

Surely a PSU should last the life of the board though (unless there is a power surge or something and then you would not expect a warranty replacement).

I agree.

 

Maybe its time promethean did some more market research and developed products more friendly to the consumer.

 

I for one would buy lots of nice new robust pens / power supplies from promethean if they provided a good TCO.

@steve: To be fair, a 10 year warranty on the board is very good. However, I would argue that is the least likely part to fail.

 

Personally, I use GTCO Calcomp Interwrite boards. These come with a 2 year warranty which covers the board, pens (you get two) and the PSU. I'm not sure about the cables since the warranty statement neither mentions that they are or are not covered but I think I could probably afford to replace this since they are standard USB cables rather than the funny-looking efforts that Promethean use.

In my opinion the pens could have slightly more weight to them and have a rubberised grip as has been suggested here.
