How much are you paying for Data points ?

Hi i'm very interested to find out just how much you are paying for CAT5e / 6 or Fibre as I have had 3 comparison quotes from installation companies that differ by quite a margin for the same brief.

For a double data point around £70 for a straight forward run but I know some of our suppliers can make that nearly £200 which seems to be common.

£70... for a socket? I'm starting to think I should look at becoming a full time data cabler. ;-)

That is for a double data point, back box and cabling plus what is needed. Ex BT bloke high standard of work. If we require tray work that bumps it up but nothing something we need much of. Very good bloke.

I've just done 100 outlets with 8 boxes of 305m LSOH Cat5e and assorted cabling hardware around £800 cost so that's £8 per point for the cable and fixings.

The labour is the killer a decent cabling contractor will charge upto £500 per day per man.

The cost of the 3 compartment trunking installed by the sparks was a fair sum as well.

 

Fibre terminations are quick and easy nowadays with fusion spliced pigtails and with OM3 at around 40p a meter but this jumps to £12 per meter for steel armoured.

 

£70 per point is a fairly common base line price but most contractors work on a day rate as there is simply no money in coming out to do 2 Points!

We had to call a Gas Safe plumber out the other day £90 call out charge and £75 ph min 1 hr, £165 +VAT for what was 5 mins work.

 

in comparison Data Cabling is cheap!

wow thanks guys , I feel a lot better now , my best price was £820+VAT for 48 CAT5e ports (24 doubles) including all fixtures fittings and labour fully certified which works out about £20.50 a point.

That's not bad, be prepared to pay more if a panel is required in the cab too.

a panel should only be about £20 though and terminating at the panel should surely be included in the cost for running the cable and terminating?

Or just do it your self, get the bits at cheap prices and you'll find you will save yourself a fortune. We used to get someone in ages ago to do the trunking, wiring etc, now i do it all and the contractors just run the electric cables and connect them up. Everything else is done by us.
