Esafety - Looking to implement Auto Logoff - What do you do?

Hi,

 

We are looking at implementing Auto Logoff of staff computers using a logoff screensaver.

 

How are you managing auto logoff?

 

What sort of time frame are you using for logoff?

 

How do you manage staff who need to projector presentations etc. and are away from the computer?

 

Any other tips, issues etc. when you implemented this?

PS. Locking the computers doesn't seem a good idea as we would just end up with lots of locked computers and staff resetting them to log themselves on - which isn't good for the computers

We set our screensavers to kick in after 6 mins, which locks the screen for members of staff. This doesn't exist for students, but they are able to choose to lock the workstation themselves if they so wish.

 

Staff running full presentations via powerpoint or full screen movies etc via Windows Media Player etc, I don't think the screensaver kicks in. Staff also use the freeze function on the projectors for other software so the display is still shown on the screen for the students.

 

Auto logoff probably wouldn't go down to well here, especially if staff are working on a document in their office then leave to teach then return to their office and they realise they haven't saved and the log off has lost their work. We've used locking screensavers for 10+ years and very rarely have issues with multiple locked computers in a room. Generally, our staff have ownership of a classroom as well and they will teach for a high proportion of the day in the same room. I could envisage problems if our staff wander from classroom to classroom for each lesson and the previous teacher hasn't logged off.

That's why we limit the number of logins allowed Forces people to log off, but yes you'll always get those that force off computers. Even if it's not locked, just being lazy when logging off.

Ah, good point I forgot to mention we did that too. 2 logins per member of staff, 1 login per student.

Why not allow them to switch user from the locked screen, assuming you are running 7?

We restrict users from logging on twice using RSLogon Limit which is a small app I wrote (RS Applications) to restrict concurrent logins. coupled with the disabled user switching it stops the multiple logon probs
