This summer I’m planning to do upgrade a server from 2000 to 2003 doing a clean install. This server holds the users home folders. How do I go about restoring the folder permissions and shares? I will be restoring the folder contents from a backup or I could copy the contents over to another server for the duration of the upgrade. If using the backup method, will the permissions and shares get restored when the folders and files get restored?

You can either use NTBackup or xcopy/robocopy the data to another server while you rebuild the machine. Both methods will preserve the ACLs.

In either case, you will have to recreate the shares.

I'll be doing the same as i'll be setting up a RAID5 setup on it over the current 1 drive. I will copy all the date off onto an external HDD as for permission's i normally worry about that when the time occurs.

Did I miss something or mis-understand the origional post?

It said "Clean Install" !

Surely if the intention is to recreate a new instance of an already established domain then all of the existing file/folder security will have been established using the old domain SID.

Restoring your old data backed up with the previous domain security credentials to a new clean domain or server will not help you!

All of your data will be security orphaned and you will have to reset the file folder security on all objects.

Flame me if I got it all wrong, but I heard alarm bells when I read this one.

There are two DC's. The one that holds the users home folders is server 2000 and will be upgraded to 2003. The second DC will keep the security information so restore of the data should be possible. Well that's what I'm hoping anyway :) I will test this out when I'm back in school.

Just tried restoring a few of the users home folders on the other server. The security info restored ok but the share info didn’t. None of the restored folders are shared at all. Like most schools we use the format of .

Get a list of the foldernames and with a bit of excel work and heavy use of concatenate you can come up with a big list of net share commands you can paste into a command prompt and run, thats what I do
