Vanilla windows - test setup

I'm looking at setting up a little test server, we have an old one, and having a play with removing Ranger and setting up a vanilla system. Now i know it can be done but are there any packages i should be looking at to aid in this trial.

 

I know i wont be thanked for saving the college 5K+ a year but on the other hand would do my experience no harm by giving it ago.

At the moment I'm using vmware server for a test setup.

 

Running it under Ubuntu linux.

 

I have a DC and 2 XP clients so that I can play with group policy etc... and if I screw it up I can just either go back to an earlier snapshot or start with a new copy of an image.

Ha, I have been setting up VMWare to do the opposite... Installing Ranger on a vanilla system!

 

What didn't you like about ranger and we're buying into it this summer!

To be honest i have no problems with Ranger, we've been using it for the past 4 years and apart from some of the really old/odd ESL/LS packages we've had no problems with it.

 

The way i've had to start looking at it though is it's costing us 5K+ per year, which would be 10 pc's extra per year. Or other software for the IWB or other teaching aids.

 

I just want to setup a test bed to see how it'll compare.

i would go down the VMWare route aswell... but i think most of the things that you will want to do you should be able to achieve from just windows server.

 

If you come across any problems then i would suggest searching edugeek and if you dont have any luck just post on here, and people will be able to make suggestions.

Ishall have a look at VMWare then and see what i can come up with. End of it though if it's gonna be too much work swapping it'll be let, just like not moving to Exchange lol.

If you dont want to install linux you can use virtual pc 2007, as its free..

 

VMWear workstation for windows is not free however...

 

you can run VMWear server, but only on a windows server 2000/3 setup.

 

VPC2007 is slower then VMwear but it works ....

i have my lovely debian machine running in it at the mo infact.

Nonsense. VMWARE server works fine on XP!

You want GPMC installed on your server straight off.

Then maybe the Adminpak on a client to see how that works. Search MS for both.

 

 

TBH you should have no problem at all getting server up and running with DHCP, DNS etc etc, its only making the right policies and scripts that you might get stuck on.

Could you not just do away with the upgrade cover? I thought the annual charges were just to cover you should a new version come out?

I'm doing the same at the moment. Ranger is costing us a fortune which could be spent elsewhere.
