ICT Technician Job All day interview

im fresh out of university , and i got a interview at a high school for an ict technician post. The interview involves doing the actually job for a whole day from 8am till 4pm

Can you tell me what type stuff i will be doing? i am assuming if there is nothing wrong with the computers/network i will only be changing password. They said i will not have to do any networking also if anyone works in a high school could please tell me if a have to give support to MS office applications.

 

basically can you tell me what you do all day as an ICT technician

Depends really.. if as you say their network is good you could find yourself twiddling your thumbs a bit. Unless the NM has deliberately broken something They will probably also want to see how you are with people.

 

Proactively - Some stuff you could do is check antivirus (if they have managed AV) and tape backups etc - something you should do everyday anyway. You could also use the day to find out as much as you can about the infrastructure - you cant really do your job without it Just show you are keen.

I'd be surprised if they're not going to give you any set tasks during the day - just hoping that something suitable turns up doesn't give them much of a picture of what any candidate can do and doesn't give you a chance to shine :-)

 

Definitely do things like checking the virus scanner; if you're asked to look at a machine for whatever reason, run up event viewer - there probably won't be anything there (if it's OK!) but it shows you are proactive in looking for things.

 

Offer to make the tea :-)

 

Ask things like "how do you monitor disc space on servers"? Downloading from the web? Backups? Network traffic through switches? - show that you're aware of some of the routine stuff that has to be done.

 

Ask about loggin jobs - is there a helpdesk system in place (doesn't matter if it's an old exercise book or a super web based system; you'll have to use it if you get the job!)

 

I wouldn't worry too much about not getting paid - for most job interviews you're going to have to give up at least half a day and you might get travel expenses but that's about all.

Good joke - but I've been to quite a few "interviews" where the presentation is about some problem the company has - and they use the interviews as free consultancy - used to annoy me a lot once I'd twigged what was happening...

Like everyone said so far, just do the basics. You cant be expected to walk into the job and run the place so dont try. Do as your told and ask for things to do when your not busy. Offer to complete tasks that you know how to and observe the ones you dont and keep asking questions. Its all simple to do and easy to forgt when your there

 

You wont know how to do everything, but if you show your enthusiastic and willing to learn thats the key. Im sure you will be fine, you have already took the initiative and asked here. Good Luck
