How can I access $ shares from a Mac

With Windows 7/Vista/XP, I simply used to hit CMD+K, type "smb://HOMEPC/C$" enter the credentials and away it went. I can't do that any more on Windows 8. Tried disabling firewall and everything, but no luck at all. Any ideas how I can achieve this again?

I think it is a bug in Mountain Lion since there is a huge thread on the Apple forums with lots of people complaining about not being able to connect to Windows shares.

Some say that connecting via the computers IP address works (smb://192.168.0.10/sharename), while others have had success by shortening the computer + share name to 12 characters or less or putting quotes around it (smb://"server/share").

10.8.1 is meant to fix some SMB issues, but if you can't wait until this is released you could download the latest beta from here.

I've managed to do a work around by creating an actual share to the folder I want and using (smb://HOMEPC/Folder) but I want to access the whole drive using the builtin $ share, (C$, D$ etc) which doesn't work. I'll stick to the workaround for the time being and will wait to see if 10.8.1 fixes this. Not all bad I guess, just annoying!

This is thanks to Apple dropping samba and going their own way with code so they could do stuff without releasing it. Unfourtunatly their new implementation is still full of fail.

SMBUP : eduo.info » SMBUp

NOTE: SMBUp installs Samba, which in turn replaces Apple’s OS X’s native netbios and SMB services. This means that while connecting to servers from the Finder remains functional, the Finder won’t be able to “browse” network services and servers from the network won’t show up in the Finder’s sidebar. Be advised.

Haven't had the chance to test SMBUp yet but the 10.8.1 update still won't allow me to browse to $ shares. Instead of now trying to look for the share it just says "You do not have permission" immediately.

Perhaps a mod could move this to the Mac section as I think its a Mountain Lion issue instead of a Windows 8 issue.
