Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2012

We currently use Backup Exec 2012 to perform daily D2D and Friday tapes to a Single LTO4 Drive using 800gb/1.6tb tapes.

 

I have been testing Microsoft DPM 2012 creating a protection group for each server I want to backup (is this the right approach). Happy with the D2D facilities that DPM provides (current 5 day rention), but looking at the writing long term data to tape can multiple protection groups be written to a single tape?

 

I would like DPM to produce weekly and monthly tapes as we do with Backup Exec, could and one offer some advice!

 

Are there any considerations for protecting the DPM server? I was thinking of buying a HP Micro Server and using this to as secondary DPM server to backup the primary.
