i pulled the led from the plastic block in inhabits and shoved it out of the way

Tinted film between led + plastic works too.

Can't see the LED from the image posted but wouldn't a pair of wire snippers work , cut off one of the wires from the LED ( positive or negative ). Maybe even solder in an on off switch ?

I just stick some black LX tape over the LEDs. Although I think I need to get some silver LX for my Mac Mini as black looks a little out of place
