ADSL Router

Hi,

 

Has anyone purchased a ADSL Router recently that they can recommend. We have this abysmal EHT-300 which doesn't reset when its line gets dropped so when I am not around the internet goes down.

 

I'm wanting one with a built in Modem and happy to play with Smoothwall.

Have you looked at any of the Netgear kit?

 

In my experience it's all been good, not used any xDSL stuff though as I've got cable.

 

The Netgear DG834 looks like it has everything you'd need (SPI Firewall, VPN Passthrough etc) although it is a home based product, may only support a certain number of client MAC addresses.

If you can afford it, have a look at Draytek's Vigor line of routers (specifically one of the 2600 variants). They cost around £150-£175, but they are solid kit and come with ADSL modem, 4 port switch, VPN capabilites, proper firewall, some have wireless, and some also have VoIP facilities.

You don't work for Akhter do you.??? They recommended the 2500 (it may have been a 2600 but they sound so fed up all the time I couldn't tell).

 

One thing I would like to do is have the router block access between the lan ports so I can have seperate networks accessing the router without having access to each other.

I have a Netgear 834g and it is a fantastic piece of kit. Reliable, secure and well supported with frequent updates to the firmware adding in extra features.

I have always liked the look of the Draytek Vigor range but never had one. I ahve always heard very good stuff about them though.

I use a Smoothwall box with a PCI ADSL modem after having tried numerous routers, i found that none of them a can beat the realiablility of a smothie, also you can set them to reboot if the net access is down for 5 mins.

Have you got the make and model of the PCI ADLS modem. I would rather just stick a adapter in and do it that way, and it should be a hell of alot cheaper.

Also I'm not the most knowledgable with Smoothwall and adding adapters. Is it easy enough to do.?

 

 

On another note, do you pay for Smoothwall Corp or are you using the free license version.? I've been running Smoothwall for about 9 months now and the mods you can get make ISA look stupid. I recently put on the full firewall control and the bandwidth view for the GUI page. It helped me track down a little ***** who was using bittorrents in his boarding room.

The Netgear DG834GT is really good i use and includes all the stuff you need, firewall, switch, routing and connection to adsl. I haven't had any problems with this kit at all.

Re the modem on a Smoothwall, I use a BeWAN PCIst because thats the only one thats seems to be 100% supported out of the box, it also has support for the USB speedtouch modems although you need to install the drivers manually due to licensing issues. You can buy the correct PCI modem from the Smoothwall website. I use the express version because all the extras in the corporate are available free of charge anyway.
