I am installing a new server 2008 and creating a clean network. All our roaming mandatory profiles work fine with xp but I want to introduce some windows 7 laptops as well. Our users need to be able to switch between xp and windows7 computers but be able to roam with a mandatory profile on either. This seems a bit complicated from what I have read. Is there a simple way to do this?

Thanks,

The two profile types are quite different with xp and 7. When you say you want to 'roam' with a mandatory profile what do you mean?

You will have to recreate a mandatory profile for the Windows 7 clients in a slightly different way, during sysprep is the preferred method now. I am looking at mandatory profiles to speed up the logon of clients with Windows 7 which I still find is too slow.

Profiles will work in the same fashion, however they'll adopt .V2 at the end. Windows will use the standard profile for XP and the .V2 profile for Windows Vista, 7 and 8. It really isn't complicated, but you may find other parts of your network setup may need tweaking so your users can use XP or 7.

Thanks James,

What I mean is that they can get the same profile wherever they logon. It is a standard desktop etc. but needs to be the same whichever machine they log on to. We have used this with all xp machines for ages on server 2003 so I'm unsure how to mix in with windows 7.
