Home setup recommendations for a VDI noob - Hyper-V and VM Sphere

Im looking at setting up a smallish home setup to learn more on hypervisor and VM stuff as its what I'm using at my new job....or will be anyway. Could anyone recommend any setups I've been told a HP Proliant G5> tower would be a decent balance in terms of performance and value and work do tend to use Proliant gear.

 

No clear distinctions as to what I plan on doing yet just playing around and learning as I go rather then messing on our live NW

For just home setup/mucking around I would look at just getting some desktop parts and mashing them together, if you are looking at VDI a SSD is a near must
