Worried about DPA, Dropbox or Skydrive? = VMware Project Octopus

Havn't seen anything posted about this around here so thought I would post it up - Not sure if its the right forum as its a mix between cloud and Virtual machines.

 

Looks quite interesting to add the managable features to the services above with all the data held within the IT infrastructure.

Been trying to get on the beta for ages, but they are targeting only select customers to test at the moment and its only in the US (grr).

 

The other one to look out for is 'project appblast' from VMware which is HTML5 encoding/displaying of all applications. Horizon does this now with select pre-made applications. Eircom can do this too but its reliant on RDS and remote app, but it works, even with SIMS.

 

The problem is if they go down the subscription route on a per user basis, which I think is highly likely.

Yup I've put in for it normally and I will look into seeing if we can also get a copy via my Partner program - If i can and get a chance to play (i'm away for 5 days now). I will make a full post about the pros/cons of it.

 

I have seen Ericom before which works great and actually ties in well with VMware view but the only need for that IMHO is for people using Chrome books and we all know how successful they are...

Hmm the peppercrew article has a few in accuracy's from other things I have read and the VMware Video - it says there is no linux client but I beleive there is one for Octopus.

@plexer - res does look pretty good. Although Its a shame it has some non-standard port needs (i.e 8080 for mac).

Just to update this:

 

Res Hyperdrive looks good although unfortuantly it requires all the data to be sat on a virtual appliance. therefore removing any legacy access via the normal share access.

 

Waiting to trial AppSense Datanow at present although have registered.

Appsense Datanow has now been released and I have been trialling for the last couple of weeks with guys in the office (one of a Mac, 3 Win 7 laptops, Samsung S3, Iphones, Ipads and a Nexus 7.

 

Have to say I have been very impressed with it. Although slight issue with Nexus 7 (Android Jelly Bean) in that you cannot download files. Very easy to setup and it just looks at AD for your home directory path and shares it out to any device you login with.

Apps sounds good but is it expensive? Been looking for a drop box we control.

At present no - although here in the office we only map home drives via folder redirection and not AD. So we have mapped our home drives to the public share (not ideal but works).

 

I'm trying to find out more information as we speak about the road map for the product. We have fed a few things back to the developers and things we would like to see (such as the ability to force 2nd factor auth such as a pin code for access rather then perm logged in)
