Found some useful information regarding 10.8 server. Stating that server admin maybe removed and service administration will be done with the server app. Its clear that Apple is moving away from enterprise management to small business. To be fair in education this does not affect us really at all. It benefits users who may not be familiar with both server admin and workgroup manager. It takes me back to the server preferences which came in 10.6 and no one used it lol. But some interesting features on its way. Profile manager looks to be improving. Lets hope they have sorted all the annoying apache errors which are present in 10.7. At this rate I will be setting up profile manager for all mac devices instead of enrolling directly to open directory. I say exciting times ahead :)

They've still not updated the documents for server edition on the support section of their site since 10.6!! I'm kinda flapping in the wind here with 10.7 at the moment.

They got rid of Workgroup Manager in 10.7, Server Admin is there but it is very simplistic. Advanced work requires the installation of the Server Tools pack.

You can have both WGM and Server Admin on 10.7, you just need to download the server admin tools

You said they got rid of WGM, so I was clarifying that they didn't get rid of it, you just need to download it. Your final sentence doesn't really clarify this at all.

I have had issues with WGM not being able to create,edit or change settings. It gives a permissions error. My advice would be to try and steer clear from WGM for lion clients and use the provided profile manager tool

Not seen or heard any issues with WGM on 10.7, and got loads of customers with this kind of set up. WGM has not really changed much such 10.5

 

However this is my advice, always set preferences for a group using a mac with the same OS version that the group will be using:

Example 1 10.6 OD server, set 10.6 client preferences using a 10.6 client with wgm installed on it. set 10.7 client preferences using a 10.7 client with wgm installed on it.

Example 2 10.7 OD server, set 10.6 client preferences using a 10.6 client with wgm installed on it. set 10.7 client preferences using a 10.7 client with wgm installed on it.

 

I hope that they don't get of workgroup manager, it can do much more than profile manager. I would be surprised if they did IMO.

I would have to agree I have not had an issue with WGM on 10.7. I too will truly miss using WGM. Lets hope they massively improve the reliability of profile manager!

Nowhere in the article does it say that WGM will be going, it just says that all the services are in Server.app. Hopefully there will be a server admin tools add-on with WGM included, though it will probably not have Server Admin this time.

Lion server was a mid point for this. Part of the options were in the Server app and the other half was handled by Server Admin Tools. Personally I'm going to miss the Server Admin Tools. I found them to be more useful. Seemed to have more fine grain control over everything but similar to Apples ideas with other applications they strive to make it more consumer'ish rather than practical. Will see how it goes. Already I've seen a few options that are not in Lion that I had with SL Server. ML Server will remove even more :(

Workgroup Manager works fine on 10.7 Server. As does all the server Admin tools. The Server.app is crap to be honest. Creating or modifying a sharepoint is a crap shoot.

But there are a number of options that have been removed that are in Server Admin for 10.7 that were in 10.6. They removed them and crammed them into "Server" app. As for 10.8 from what I understand we will be losing Server Admin and WGM as WGM is replaced by the Profile Manager entirely.

 

I already have one Profile Manager server than looks after all of our iOS devices and today just started on a separate server to handel all of our desktops and laptops.

Indeed! Me and @Rozzer spent a bit of time trying to get it to work properly with our iMacs and Active Directory users and the end conclusion was giving up and going back to the WGM way of doing things!

Yeah, I was not willing to use profile manager in lion server for mac management as I could see it was a massive downgrade, I just used it for iOS. But looks like there will be no choice but to use it in ML Server. If it has not improved much, and third party options look really expensive I may consider writing my own version of WGM for mountain lion or hacking WGM to work.

Yeah I tend to avoid profile manager for workstation management and would only install it for IOS management.

 

Fingers crossed it gets better with 10.8 :)
