mdench Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Just had a HP 1TB HDD die in one of the servers... Never bought server disks before anything i should be looking for when buying replacements? Seagate ES2. 1TB 7200rpm sata. HP MODEL - GB1000EAFJL Any pointers would be grateful!
jamesfed Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 If its in a HP server on a HP RAID controler you might have some fun with HPs custom firmware that will only let some drives work.... Best bet is to either by direct from HP (you may find something on the HP renew site for a reasonable price) or buy a drive as close as possible to the one you have already.

Is that in the MS20/60 in the backup room? its the slot rather then the disk. its like the 3rd that slot has eaten. EDIT: ask damian i bought the originals from him

Replace the backplane, have done that a few times for dl380 g3 boxes that had messy backplanes after five or so years, its just a sas/sata or in my case scsi bridge. A second hand one cost less than $100.

A second hand one cost less than $100. Its a 5 year old MSA20 that isn't doing anything/wasn't doing anything when i left bar wasting electricity!

Enterprise ones so not too bad - they had no failures in the first year of it sitting there! Software Raid 5 raid 1 on the OS drives (250gb sata).
