Jabber server?

This would be a useful tool I reckon, an edugeek jabber server, with a http front end on the site for during school hour use (only registered users could use it though), and the ability to use it normally too.

 

What do people think? I run a jabber server of my own at the moment, so would be up for implementing one if people would like it... Would just need a domain (something like jabber.edugeek.net would be apt).

What features of jabber would people like? Conferences? IM Gateway to other networks such as MSN, Yahoo, IRC, ICQ and AIM? Filtering? Public logs?

Jabber is about the only thin that works here through lea as I can connect via 443 so have used it as a transport for msn before.

 

To be honest I'd be happy for it to be just us with conference facility.

I can't connect to any external jabber servers unless via a web client - and then I need to make sure that words like 'jwchat' don't get filtered...

 

I can get a jabber server running on my own 'generic' domain and set up some edugeek conferences on there - this would be a start...

Right, I have now set up a jabber server at wizzymail.com. There are 2 web based clients available at:

https://wizzymail.com/jwchat

 

The first works just like a normal client, via the usual port 5222 - so will be filtered by most RBC's. The second connects using HTTP-Binding so uses port 80/443 (depending on whether you use http or https to log in).

 

If anyone would like an account to have a play, please PM me and I will create one. I have disabled standard account creation, as I don't want it to be generally used by any old person.

 

PS. It also has the transports for MSN, Yahoo, AOL and AIM set up and working - but I have to add you to a permission group to let you use em, so if you want to, just ask and I'll add you there too.

Oh, and also... The server is running Openfire, so it is very, very simple to tie it in with account creation on any future 2.0 release of edugeek.
