loustarrrr Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Hi all, I am wondering if somebody can help me with this, here we have a two domain network, controlled by one DHCP Server. We have a Staff Domain and a Student Domain. With Windows XP we can push out the DNS Settings via Group Policy whereas Windows 7 we cannot. Has anyone came up with a solution for this as I am working on a disaster recovery network and would like to be able to push out the DNS Settings through GPO or a startup script. Thanks, Louis
Michael Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Seeing as you have DHCP Server configured, why not use Scope Options, 006 and specify your DNS settings here? Internal DNS, then any external DNS IPs. To my knowledge, the only reason you'd need to deploy DNS settings is if you didn't have an immediate DNS server on site, but I can't think why you'd have a network setup like this. Having a DNS server on site means requests are served quicker.
loustarrrr Posted July 3, 2012 Author Posted July 3, 2012 We do have DNS Servers on site, it's just that our current network Windows Server 2003/XP, we have the DNS servers for each domain in the Scope Options, however, it sets the primary DNS Server to the first in the list which causes slow logins for the other domain so we have them customised through Group Policy, sorry if that didn't make much sense, it's hard to explain.
Michael Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 In which case, if you only have a handful of admin workstations you'd be better off configuring static IPs and let the curric side of things be managed by DHCP server.
loustarrrr Posted July 3, 2012 Author Posted July 3, 2012 We have around 70 admin machines, I shall consider this then or look into scripting it Thanks
