robk Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 We are finding that live@edu is putting in a secondary screen requesting mobile phone and secondary email addresses. We are using sso so don't need the password reset functions. Anyone know if this can be stopped? @jamesbmarshall are you arround?
plexer Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 We're not using sso but as long as I can access the admin panel it's not a problem either but a pain and confusing for users. Ben
jamesbmarshall Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 We are using sso so don't need the password reset functions. We're not using sso but as long as I can access the admin panel it's not a problem either but a pain and confusing for users. This is required as part of the forthcoming upgrade to Office 365 for education. As part of the upgrade your users Windows Live IDs become self-managed and in order to be able to do things like self-service password resets we need to collect some information. After the upgrade the SSO toolkit will need to be replaced with AD FS 2.0 federation, allowing you to manage your identity directly from your local AD; but the existing WLIDs will still exist for those upgraded users so that they retain access to services like SkyDrive, Xbox Live, Windows Phone, Zune, etc... Users can "make it go away" by filling in the form with their details. It's a one-time job. 1
PiqueABoo Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 I do get the rationale but decent prior notice would have been good and it's obvious that you're asking kids, in some cases Primary kids for their mobile phone numbers etc. tOH (teacher) was bugging me about this: Is it some kind of ID hack? She wasn't going to bleeping well hand over her mobile phone etc.
robk Posted July 2, 2012 Author Posted July 2, 2012 @jamesbmarshall Thanks for the information, I have to agree with @PiqueABoo some notice would have been nice, is there any way to delay the collection of this data for a site? Or at least whats the minimum information that can be entered. I am concerned that some parents will consider this a DPA issue with the collection of student mobiles etc.
Blue_Cookeh Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 I was wondering why I was seeing this when logging in online... we haven't deployed Live@Edu to pupils yet, and the staff don't use any of the web-based services, so they haven't seen it. Before it becomes an issue, is there any way to stop this? I understand it's because the Live profiles are becoming self managed, but in a school I can't really expect our staff and (soon) primary pupils to put data like this in, particularly with the huge push for eSafety lately.
jamesbmarshall Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 (edited) There is no way to stop it. Your staff will have to fill it in. If you don't want to go through this process with your students then you could upgrade your tenant to Office 365 and provision your pupils straight onto that. That's going to be the only way. Edited July 3, 2012 by jamesbmarshall
Blue_Cookeh Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Ah ok, that's pretty much how we were going to provision pupil accounts anyway... we're looking forward to being upgraded from Live@Edu to Office365.
MicrodigitUK Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 There is no way to stop it. Your staff will have to fill it in. If you don't want to go through this process with your students then you could upgrade your tenant to Office 365 and provision your pupils straight onto that. That's going to be the only way. This is all well and good but why didn't we get any notice. We only use SSO kit for all staff and students and its just confused all of our users to why they are geting asked for this personal info. @ jamesbmarshall Why didn't Microsoft inplement an option to switch this message off if using Live@Edu SSO Kit? Sorry but its a bit of a joke that changes where made and admin users where not given any notice.
jamesbmarshall Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 @ jamesbmarshall Why didn't Microsoft inplement an option to switch this message off if using Live@Edu SSO Kit? There is no option to switch it off. The information update is mandatory whether you use the SSO toolkit or not. After the upgrade to Office 365 is complete your existing users will manage their Windows Live IDs themselves, outside of your control. When it comes to resetting a forgotten password they will have to use the self-service portal which needs to be populated with some information. The SSO toolkit does not work, and is not supported, in Office 365 for education. In order to keep this functionality you'd need to move to AD FS 2.0 or Shibboleth federation. Michael Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 I've got to be honest, Microsoft really have dropped the ball on this one. Another organisation that doesn't understand how schools work. Requesting all this information is ridiculous. Do they really expect a Primary school child to self manage a password? What planet are they living on? Is there no way we can PowerShell in the school phone number into each and every account? These sort of decisions are going to force pupils to use their hotmail accounts as a secondary account - exactly what we don't want, as the school have no control over the account whatsoever! Come on Microsoft, we're talking about children here using e-mail services. Let school admins do the day to day running and supporting of accounts.
john Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Got an email from MS confirming this today. Ben Same here got the notice today for a primary not good show Microsoft the notice should have come a month or so before the change over.
PiqueABoo Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Well they did apologise: We apologize for the late notice and any potential confusion to your user base. Another organisation that doesn't understand how schools work. Everyone went to one when they were kids. I concluded they understood perfectly but did it anyway.
Michael Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 There isn't really any confusion though really - Microsoft should have given more notice, but also take into consideration school's needs. It's called Live@Edu after all...
PiqueABoo Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 I think it's called realpolitik. Ignoring the price: Live@Edu (with a dash of school friendly extensions) est mort, vive l'Office365 (with none) nombre total d'utilisateurs! Or something like that.
Michael Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Can someone explain to me in English exactly what happens when migrating Live@Edu to Office 365? Microsoft have made the whole process incredibly confusing. I have three schools setup with Live@Edu with all accounts created. The domains have been verified, so all that is required is to send the MX changes to the LA which then makes Live@Edu the 'live' system. That was the original plan for the end of July 2012. I've received an e-mail that states 'my establishment has been invited to upgrade' and that they'll be put on the 'free Exchange Online Plan 1'. Great, I understand all this bit. I've checked the institute profile is all up-to-date and I plan on changing all user passwords via PowerShell after the upgrade. So to start the upgrade it says sign in to the Live@edu Service Management Portal and follow the instructions. What instructions, there aren't any? And then it says I'll receive an e-mail once I start the upgrade. So how do I start the upgrade without any instructions?
plexer Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 You sign in to the management centre using the link in the email and follow the steps there? Plus damn I've just realised that the tenant I've been invited to upgrade isn't the one I want to upgrade, grrrr. Ben
Michael Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 You sign in to the management centre using the link in the email and follow the steps there? Plus damn I've just realised that the tenant I've been invited to upgrade isn't the one I want to upgrade, grrrr. Ben The one school admin account I login in, I receive this error: You need to enrol in the Live@edu programme before you can access the Live@edu Service Management Portal. Learn more about Live@edu If you are already enrolled in the Live@edu programme, this message appears because the Service Management Portal is not yet supporting existing users who have not been migrated to the new system. Contact Live@edu support for assistance With the other two accounts, I can login successfully, I see the Service Management Portal with menu options to the left as normal. So where am I supposed to proceed to start an upgrade?
Michael Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Thanks and I presume you see that as soon as you login? I wonder why I don't for the domain the e-mail was referring to? I received the e-mail on 3rd July and as I've been busy, I've not had the chance until now to look at it. I wonder if it has anything to do with the MX records not being moved over as yet?
plexer Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 I had to add an additional contact before the upgrade domains button became live but all the rest was allready there. Ben
Michael Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Really strange - it had to happen to me didn't it? I've sent off an e-mail to Microsoft support to see if there's anything they can do. Time will tell
jamesbmarshall Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 If you're not already using Live@edu, which by the sounds of it you've not yet rolled it out, I would recommend cancelling the Live@edu service completely and just sign up straight onto Office 365, rather than go through the upgrade process. Go into Live@edu, delete any users you've created, and cancel the service at Windows Live Admin Center, then go to Secure Web Services for Schools, Colleges and Universities - Office 365 to sign up. The reason for this is that you've not got any production data or live users in the service. The upgrade process leaves existing users with two identities to deal with: one personal, one institutional. Any users created after the upgrade will only get an institutional identity so it makes sense to start everyone off in the same manner. If you want to know more about the upgrade, check out the wiki: Live@Edu Upgrade to Office 365 for education - Live@Edu Upgrade to Office 365 for education - Office 365 - Microsoft Office 365 Community
Michael Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 Thanks for the reply - So basically Microsoft have made a right mess of this haven't they? It's taken me considerable time to setup Live@Edu, create all users and other specifics. It's tempting to ditch the whole lot and go with Google's offering.
