iMac in a coma!

I have a number of Intel iMacs that have been working fine until last week when one of them refused to turn on. All that happens is the white light glows a couple of times and then nothing. The screen doesn´t light up or anything!

 

I have checked that the RAM is seated correctly (the correct error beeps can be heard if all the RAM is removed). What else can I do?

Sorry sounds like a hardware issue. Apple support is probably your best option assuming its under warrenty :-(

I had a similar problem and found that removing the power lead for 5 seconds from the back of the iMac will sort it out.

 

I think its an issue when new firmware is installed. Incidentally I have the same problem with my iPod. After a few months use it will not be recognised by my PC. After shutting down and removing the power lead it's fine. I guess all that residual power needs to dissipate fully.

Did you solve your problem Ric_? I have the same issue with one of our iMac's also and after having gone through the whole 'reset SMU' and 'reset PRAM' things I now have it turning on but there is no display and I can't try and boot of a cd/dvd as the drive is not working. Bricked would be a good description.

Sorry... meant to update this thread. I reset the PRAM which fixed the original problem, however it caused the fan to go mad. To fix the fan problem I simply had to unplug the iMac for 10 seconds and plug it back in again.

 

I've decided that to fix Macs you must first think of the least logical repair and try it out... it will probably fix the problem!

I had that same problem with 10 of my macs. PRAM reset fixed a few but reimaging some of them blind did the trick to

Just to state the obvious -

 

When new firmware is installed the mac will stay on a white screen, before the chime or the apple logo, for quit a long time. Whatever you do - DO NOT TURN THE MAC OFF - until you here the chime.

 

I'm not 100% at what point the firmware gets written to but I have a feeling it is here. If you turn the mac off while the firmware is being written to, it won't be a mac anymore

 

 

Also, I've had the blank screen and flashing power button thing before. Usually it means the Mac is in hibernation. Unfortunately Mac's seems as stubborn as any other PC when it comes to coming out of hibernation.

 

Usually holding the power button for a few seconds, so it powers completely off, and then turning it on solves the problem.
