Cheap smartphone recommendations?

Hi all

 

Looking for a cheapo android smartphone - preferably not a contract job as I fancy using my GiffGaff sim in it - any recommendations or warnings? I saw the Huawei advertised - anyone used one?

I'm using a Motorola Defy Mini, bought as an unlocked phone from Adsa for £79.

It's a nice little phone. The battery life is very good (for a smart phone)

It's got a small internal memory, which means you can't install tons of apps, but I only run with a basic suite of apps so that's OK with me. Power users should look elsewhere.

Orange Sanfranciso version 1, or if you want to pay the few quid extra, the Sanfrancisco 2 (not much processor or ram improvement but does have a front and back camera to name a few improvements).

I'd get an atrix or similar off ebay, dual core and quite a bit of ram, stick ICS on it, should be pretty good.

You can normally pick up a Samsung Galaxy Y for £50 on pay as you go at Asda on Vodafone, or a Samsung Galaxy Ace which has a bit better screen for under £100.

I hope I don't live to regret it but I have signed up for a deal with Carphonewhorehouse for a Galaxy Ace phone, 250m, 5000 texts and 500Mb for £7.50 a month. Not any use for you but I just picked up a LG Optimus 7Q with 16gb of storage and WinPho7.5 on special for $185 NZD including shipping. Great phone with no interface lag and unifies everything, if I could tie EG in to the people tile it would be close to perfect apart from the battery life. Only had it for a few days so I'm sure annoyances will show up but for the moment it is epic for what I paid for it, contract free.

edit: didn't read the first post, doesn't dilute my point though, you can get a lot of WP7 phone for not much money at the moment. Edited June 30, 2012 by SYNACK

The Galaxy Ace was free on the contract. Looking at the reviews, the main negatives were the screen resolution (480x320) and the 800MHz procesor not being lightening fast. Battery life got good reviews.

Used to use a HTC Wildfire, it was a good little all-rounder, but a little sluggish at times. Upgraded to a Desire a while back, rooted it recently and put CyanogenMod 7 on it. No regrets.

Battery life isn't perfect, but I pop it on charge every night and don't have any problems with it. It only dies if it's been a slow day at work.

 

I'd upgrade to a Desire HD if I could, but the screen condition of the standard Desire is still more-than-acceptable.
