Anyone running mountain lion with appletv?

Just wondering how good the mirroring feature is?

I am tempted by the cheapness of appletv just for the wireless mirroring tbh so was wondering how well it worked?

Does audio feed through as well from the mirrored laptop?

My boss used it with the Ipad and his Iphone in the office - seemed to work really well (and i hate apple!!)

If you have one, the audio can also be sent through an AirPlay enabled AV receiver.

Yes ... it does work and quite well ... the only problem I had was self-generated when I tried to stream a video shared from my iTunes library from my desktop (Lion) to iTunes on the laptop (ML) which I then mirrored to the AppleTV ... it had been working fine, and then kept dropping ...

 

Perhaps I should have scheduled WoW to start up finish off a re-install for a different time.

 

Once I killed that it was fine.

 

I'm trying to work my way through most of my common apps to see what works well and doesn't ... and not found anything that I hadn't expected. It is no good expecting it to replace a connected monitor when working on Final Cut Studio.

What sort of things are you looking to mirror?

Has anyone wiresharked it, knowing Apple it will just be a ripped off version of VNC like their remote control tools so it may be possible to stream to an AppleTV from any device assuming one could figure out how they have messed with the previously open basis. I know you can use VNC to remote control a Mac from a PC using the built in tools if you jump through the right hoops.

Worth bearing in mind, and correct me if I'm wrong, it'll only work with i3/5/7 devices, not older Core 2 or Core devices. Bit shitty if you ask me.

You are right that it will only work with Sandy/Ivy Bridge-based Mac's, but that's only because the older Intel CPUs are , not Apple!

 

AirPlay Mirroring requires hardware capable of encoding live video without taking too much CPU, so it is only available on iPhone 4S, iPad 2, the new iPad, and Macs with Sandy Bridge CPUs. (Source)

Yes. It doesn't use VNC for reasons which should be obvious.

 

AirPlay is based on well-known standard networking protocols such as Multicast DNS, HTTP, RTSP, RTP or NTP, with custom extensions.

You are right that it will only work with Sandy/Ivy Bridge-based Mac's, but that's only because the older Intel CPUs are , not Apple!

 

You can't blame Intel for not inventing the extra encoding instructions that Apple make use of sooner. They built it and Apple made use of it.

 

VNC does do video and sound just very inefficiently, also you're pushing it calling VNC a protocol when it is primarily a string of screenshots with optimisations bolted on for dear life to the side of it.

Its mostly for video playback etc, nothing too intense. The fact there is a Windows client (AirParrot) makes it sound better. I will never be streaming itunes from my pc to it as itunes is huge and evil to leave running on my pc.

The biggest issue with AirParrot is that apple being apple could/will probably block it with an update soon enough.

How is air display different from mirroring with air play?

You can stream from an IPad to a windows machine using Air Server software I believe (so for classrooms would be ideal) - so actually would save the need to buy software. My Boss was doing it the other day. I will find a link to the software.

Its the same you can do the exact same you would with and iPad with mountain lion.

No. It's called AirPlay Mirroring on Mountain Lion too.

AirDisplay is a completely different app which lets you use your iOS device as an extra monitor for your PC / Mac. Folks are starting to get Airplay Mirroring and AirDisplay confuzzled.
