Simcfc73 Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Morning, I am having a play with MS Lync as we have been looking at an instant messaging system for staff and its dirt cheap on our schools agreement. I have it installed and working and I am on lync as an admin but wondered how everyone else has set up their system. I would like to lock it down as much as I can but the ADM that MS supplies is a bit weak. I'd also like to lock down who can chat to who... what I don't want is the kids chatting between themselves all the time.. and I wondered if groups can be automatically created for people... say set lists.

TheScarfedOne Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Get Forefront for Lync. You can do keyword filtering. Make sure you have enabled the monitoring/recording feature. Watch out - if you want to do two servers, you need to go Enterprise, which is less cheap. Just set this up myself. More advice from other users - @EduTech and @Ric_ and @Domino who are other users I believe

Where in DNS should I actually put the DNS entry for the sipinternaltls.domain.com with port 5061 pointing to the FE pool IP address? At the moment the clients are saying that they cannot connect to the exchange server....

I have set up Lync as .Local so how do I add users that all have my school domain as their account name? Do I need to add a second SIP domain?
Simcfc73 Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 Well after getting it running and adding a few users for testing I find that you can't do offline messaging so its not what I wanted anyway....I found an article on MS forum anbout this and they talk about making API's and TNT's and stuff like that which I am not going down the line of. Waaaaay to overbloated too, thats Lync and UAG I have got rid of recently... my M$ whore tag is slipping.
Simcfc73 Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 Because I wanted to use it as an alert system as well as a messaging system.. and I didn't want to give emails to all the kids in school. I intended to run it alongside emaisl for staff and instead of for outlook for kids.

Simcfc73 Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 Lync interested me cos it wasn't much cash and obvioiusly would talk to my Windows network easily enough. Looks liek I will have to look at open source stuff but I really wanted one which I could group policy the settings for ease of use.

Not sure how it'd work in terms of monitoring though or disabling the kids from messaging each other etc. :-)
