Printer Drivers will not update

We have recently changed some of our printers but have run into problems where that our XP Clients will not install/update the driver from the server. They will however install the driver if an admin logs in. Any Ideas???

 

We have various settings in group policy to enable this but it does not seem to work.

 

We have the following setting; "Computer Configuration -> Policies -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options -> Prevent users from installing printer drivers" setting to disabled.

 

Also the point and print restrictions are set to disabled in both user and computer configurations, although i think this setting is for Vista and above.

Something to do with Driver Signing, maybe ?

Seem to remember there's a GPO setting to set it to 'ignore'.

Many Thanks, Will give these a try although the policies listed on the link you gave relate to vista and above if im correct. We are currently still on XP but will still try anything

Is there anything in particular in the event log on the XP machines? I know I had a similar issue and managed to script a tool to remove the old printer and driver, then reinstall it...

Had a look at the event logs of a couple of XP clients and there is nothing flagged up...

Hmmm... Are you running Server 2003 or 2008?

The server is currently a 2003 R2 VM, looking at moving it to a fresh 2008 R2 VM soon when we move to Windows 7 (which do not seem to have the issue updating the drivers, but could not be 100% of this as we have only a select few at present, and no one has mentioned printing issues yet). We use the Print Management feature included in Server...

It's been a while since I had a 2003 / XP environment, but have you tried setting:

 

Group Policy/Local Machine/Local Computer Policy/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/User Rights Assignment/Load and unload device drivers?

 

Don'f forget a gpupdate on the XP machine once it's set, and a gpresult to check that it's applied :-)
