Permitting Access to SQL Express Database

Forgive me if this sounds a stupid question!

 

I have SQL Express set up on a Windows 7 64 bit Workstation and want to save a Hemmings database to it for my DT teacher to access from his workstation and use. I don't want to put the database on our existing SQL on the server. Can I do this - if so how please?

I might be wrong, but I think one of the restrictions of SQL express over the full version(s) is that there is no network access. It was released primarily to sit underneath a website where all that needs to access it is a local IIS install - presumably to combat the increasing use of MySQL for this purpose.

It is true that MSSQL Express doesn't accept remote connections by default, however there is a way of enabling it.

 

First up, ensure your Windows firewall allows the relevant connection - Configure Windows Firewall for SQL Server 2008 Access

 

Next, enable networking in SQL Server:

How to: Enable Network Access in SQL Server Configuration Manager (SQL Server Express)

 

After that you've got the task of configuring your application to connect to the correct server/instance.

Thanks for the replies. Would it be possible to use this software Hemming with MySQL instead do you think?

I think not - the DB create script won't work on MySQL without a rewrite, and it's unlikely that the SQL generated by the application is basic enough to be understood by both.

I'm sure it is available from other applications we use it for our access control and res workspace manager and both those have client apps that access it over the network.
