sims server move

Yes there are plenty of topics on this but none seem to be fully answered

 

I want to move our all our sims stuff onto its own dedicated server during the summer - We pay annual maintenance for SIMS direct to Capita who support us. I have emailed capita support for documentation on moving a SIMS server however they have come back and said they're not willing to release documentation as it's "a long and complicated process" 8O Oh OK.. I only have all summer to do it

 

I would probably be keen to do it myself but the system was in place before I started. Is it easy to do a move? An anyone direct me to some sort of process? We use SIMS and FMS and Nova-T.

The instructions provided by our County Council is 21 pages long and took around 4 or so hours to follow... It is a long and complex program. Unless you feel 100% sure that you can do it, don't attempt it.

Best thing to do would be to see if you can create a standalone system.

 

Basically install SIMS as for a clean install then restore SQL databases and S drives. DMS is slightly tricky in that you have to watch out for the folder naming which is server specific.

 

Also the SQL 2005/Express adds a new twist to things unless you postpone the updrade to the November release.

I needed to this last year, to be frank I put all the onus on the support company for SIMS - paid for them to come and do it, but I chose and built the basic server.

 

Anything went wrong it was their problem to fix.

 

Maybe not 'Iron-man' IT managment - but frankly with SIMS & FMS I could be doing without the hassle.

 

I had two other units to build and needed the few days in easter for that.

 

It didn't take them very long to do so I am not sure about the long and complicated bit.

NetworkGeezer has it right. You will need to work out what parts of SIMS you will need to move, some like FMS can be a bit fussy.

 

Make sure you have logins so you can check each migration stage as you do it, so that you know it works.

 

You can always migrate all the apps etc, and then just move the database nearer the time.

If you are going to install SQL 2005 on the new server, apparently if you get a clean system running along side the current one it will automatically move itself over to the new server when you do the August upgrade (i think).
