Remote working, moving our last physical server to a nice new VM. It's an 8 year old box which holds the data warehouse for our parental reporting system. Have been putting it off for ages but the hardware is starting to report errors so today is the day!

When you say normal day, do you mean for yourselves (techie, site staff etc) or everyone (inc students/teachers)? I always thought bank holiday meant just that, and across the whole country! Maybe I am missing something =/

I thought it was just me, I even checked the directgov site to make sure it was a bank holiday ;)

For all purposes bank holidays mean nothing. They don't "have" to give you them off, or pay anything extra, unless it's in your contract. They could take them out of your holiday leave etc too if they wanted. Just some companies do, some don't :D

 

You do not have a statutory right to paid leave on bank and public holidays. If your employer gives paid leave on a bank or public holiday, this can count towards your minimum holiday entitlement. There are eight permanent bank and public holidays in England and Wales (nine in Scotland and ten in Northern Ireland).

 

If you work on a bank or public holiday, there is no automatic right to an enhanced pay rate. What you get paid depends on your contract of employment

So really depends on the school, bit strange that it's a bank holiday that isn't a bank holiday as such, but meh :D I got it off so no complaints!

"Public" School with boarders... What are we to do for one day? Send 'em back home? Their parents would love that.

 

Also, May Day = "Communist" holiday. Not at all popular with the upper classes. (I know it is also a proper pre-christian holiday; that is equally unpopular with the "powers that be" around here! :amen:

Yes, everyone, full lessons planned etc etc. Independent boarding school though

Detached the data warehouse from the old server, while it was copying went and had a lovely afternoon in Hastings, fish and chips on the seafront, took the kids on a couple of rides, nodded approvingly at the thousands of bikes that had descended for a rally, got home and loaded the DB onto the new server without any problems.

 

All in all, not bad thanks ;)

You picked the right time of the day to come down, wasn't a very nice morning weather wise.

I know, got there about 1ish and it was tipping it down, had some lunch and it brightened up nicely! It's been years since I have been to Hastings, was a good day even with the thousands of students lashing it up for the "jack in the green" festivities!

Yeah tell me about it! The students was pain come the evening (Don't currently work in IT, and work in retail). Had a fight outside work last night with about 40 of them!

Heck, I'm still off today .. as:

1) I don't generally work Tuesdays anyway

2) despite the fact I offered to be in today, they said no because it's an inset day

 

I have to say though, I'm not going out, there's a strange glowing orb in the sky outside surrounded by some blue .. and I don't know what it is!

Apparently it's called a 'Sun'. Long thought of as myth, it does seem to actually exist....
