Short-throw projector in Hall?

We are looking to replace our ceiling-mounted hall projector and I'd be quite keen to go for a short-throw for the convenience of not having to get the scaffolding out when it needs maintenance. Has anyone got any experience of short-throw in this situation - is it up to the job, or suited only for small rooms/screens?

how big does the image need to be? I'm not sure a short throw would be up to it for sheer lumens, but if i know how big i can have a shufty.

the problem with that is that it requires a standard kind of throw distance. 100" diagonal screen requires 3m throw... not exactly short throw!

 

Also, whilst it doesn't have a filter, it does still have a fan in it and will still gobble dust and require maintenance, but just not every 100 hours!

is the screen 16:9 (rectangular) or 4:3 (square) as the projection screens are quoted on the diagonal screen size

Ah yes, it's 4:3.

this thing: PLC-WL2500 will do a 2.3m x 1.8m image from 1.1m on the floor. The main problem is that ultra short projectors don't really do big screens without enormous cost. The other issue is that a great many projectors come with 4:3 support as a bit of an afterthought. I can find a few projectors from hitachi and sanyo that will do it from a couple of meters, but we aren't really gaining anything by using them as they are conventional in every sense.

I agree with Oaktech Casio still need servicing every 1000Hrs same as any other projector, you migh also look at Hitachi Ultra Close focus something like the 220 as it will bolt on the wall above the screen and make maintainence simpler and is bright enough for that size.

Marc, I'm currently installing the 221, as the 220 is now end of life. The problem with the 220 is that it will only make a 100inch diagonal image on the standard wall mount, the OP needs a 353cm/138" image. If the OP is happy with the smaller image, then sure, i'll go with the 220/221 too, they are cracking projectors!

your are right about the casio, i was just thinking more about image size. you could probably get a custom mount from somewhere..

Yes your right 221, i have found in practice they do go close to 109" and yes they are good units, but that said (here it comes) they sometimes do have a problem with Victorian Schools (high roofs) and suspended ceilings they sometimes at random turn off, if they do you have to ajust the internal and ext thermistor differance, but thats another story........

ah, i see why that would be a problem! Fortunately i've installed them in 60's school with really quite low ceilings, and modern schools so not run into it.

 

I've found most projectors have some quirk or 'feature'!
